About the Game: The Seawolves re-open Stony Brook Arena once again for a nationally televised game as they host Maine in a critical game for America East Tournament seed positioning. Stony Brook is currently in a tie with Albany for fifth place, half a game behind Hartford for fourth. This is the 25th all-time meeting between these two teams, and the Black Bears lead the series 16-8, but the Seawolves have won two of the last three times at home.
Scouting Maine: The Black Bears won eight of their first nine league games, only to scuffle in the last week, losing three straight, including at Hartford Thursday, allowing 13 three-pointers. Nevertheless, Maine sports the best offense in the conference, averaging 70 PPG and scoring over 70 points in 14 of its 24 games. Defensively, when the Black Bears allow 70 or more points, they are 1-6 this season. Although Gerald McLemore (13.6 PPG) got the preseason honors earlier, it’s Troy Barnies who is having a brilliant season. The 6’7 senior forward is averaging 14.6 PPG and 7.9 RPG while shooting 53 percent from the field.
Last Time Out: The Seawolves offense produced 11 three-pointers and got timely free throws to secure a 63-56 win at New Hampshire. Bryan Dougher led the attack with 16 points and two of the team’s four game-clinching free throws in the final 30 seconds. SBU committed a season-low six turnovers in the effort and outrebounded the Wildcats 37-31.
Last Time vs. Maine: On Jan. 22, the Seawolves committed 16 turnovers that led to 18 Maine points and shot only 9-for-25 from the free throw line in a 70-59 loss to the Black Bears. SBU had climbed back from a 19-point first-half deficit to get within five in the second half, but the team couldn’t make shots to stay within striking distance. Leonard Hayes was SBU’s only consistent scorer, garnering 22 points in the loss.
