Final Stats
Seniors Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.) scored four goals apiece, but the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team suffered a 17-15 loss to Colgate in the 2011 season opener Saturday in snowy conditions in Hamilton, N.Y.
Freshman Alyssa Cardillo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) had two goals and three assists for a team-high five points in her collegiate debut. Colgate's Katie Sullivan and Colleen Bubnack each had four goals and an assist to lead the Raiders.
"It took too long for us to start today," head coach Allison Comito said. "We dug ourselves a hole we couldn't come back from. But I'm proud of our effort. We showed a lot of heart and fought our way back to where it was just a one-goal game. At the end of the day, we need to have a better start to the game, and we look forward to doing that next Wednesday."
Colgate busted open to a 5-0 lead as Sullivan and Bubnack each tallied a pair of goals. Stony Brook came right back with three straight goals, the first coming from Victoria Cable (Oakton, Va.), followed by a pair from Djaha. The Seawolves trailed 5-3 with 14 minutes left in the first half.
Colgate came right back on offense and put up four unanswered goals to go up 9-3. The Seawolves closed the gap to five before halftime, thanks to goals from Cook and Djaha. The Seawolves trailed 11-6.
Stony Brook scored five of the first seven goals in the second half to get within three. Trish Molfetta (Carmel, N.Y.) had a free position shot go past goalkeeper Christina Roa with 20:06 left to play.
The teams traded goals for a while thereafter. Cardillo scored a pair, including one with 4:08 left, to get the Seawolves within one, 16-15, but Colgate's Sullivan scored at 2:16, and with two inches of snow on the ground, the Seawolves failed to get off another shot.
Stony Brook will host its 2011 home opener Wednesday against Manhattan at LaValle Stadium at 3 p.m.
