Women's lacrosse edged at Marist

The Stony Brook women's lacrosse team battled back from a four-goal deficit to tie Marist in the final minutes, but Marist's Kelly Condon scored the game-winning goal with 26 seconds left to lift the Red Foxes to a 9-8 victory Wednesday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Victoria Cable (Oakton, Va.) and Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) led the Seawolves with three goals apiece.

Stony Brook and Marist played a tight first half that featured only six goals and was knotted at 3-3 going into halftime. Cable scored 38 seconds into the second half to put the Seawolves on top 4-3, but the Red Foxes came back with four unanswered goals, including two from Condon in less than a minute, to give Marist an 8-4 advantage.

Stony Brook chipped away at the lead with a goals from Samantha Citron (Jackson, N.J.) and Cable to make it 8-6. The teams then didn't score for another 10 minutes until Cook potted a goal at 7:25 to cut the deficit to one, 8-7. Less than three minutes later, Cook completed the comeback with another goal to make it 8-8.

Stony Brook had a golden opportunity to take the lead with 3:41 remaining, but Cable's shot hit the post. In the game's final minute, Stony Brook committed a turnover, leading to a Marist offensive attack. With 26 seconds remaining, Condon put a goal past Stony Brook's Mickey Cahill (Bay Shore, N.Y.).

Marist then won the draw control after the goal, denying the Seawolves a chance to tie.

Cable finished with her three goals and also had three ground balls. Cook scored three goals as well, surpassing the 100-career goals mark. She now has a team-high 18 on the season. Abby Ford (Baltimore, Md.) recorded three assists and now has 32 for her career, tying her with Danielle Werner (2003-06) for eighth all-time. Alyssa Cardillo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) notched an assist to keep her point streak alive at six games.

On defense, Justyne Passarelli (Glen Head, N.Y.) had five caused turnovers and five ground balls. Cahill made seven saves in the losing effort.

Stony Brook will get another crack at a MAAC team Saturday when it hosts Iona at LaValle Stadium at 1 p.m.
