Final Stats
The Stony Brook women's lacrosse team battled against the No. 1 team in the nation Maryland and played valiantly in a 19-5 loss. Abby Ford (Baltimore, Md.) and Alyssa Cardillo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) led the Seawolves with two points each.
Cardillo finished with two assists, and Ford had one goal and one assist. Victoria Cable (Oakton, Va.), Kaila Gottlick (Madison, Conn.), Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.) and Kaitlyn Harrison (West Babylon, N.Y.) all scored goals for the Seawolves. Cardillo earned America East Player of the Game honors for her strong work feeding the ball to the attackers.
Stony Brook (3-5) controlled the opening draw control and was on the cusp of scoring after earning a free position attempt, but could not convert after holding the ball for nearly three minutes. That opened up a chance for Maryland (9-0) to control possession, and the Terrapins capitalized at 26:48 with a goal by Sarah Mollison. Maryland scored seven unanswered goals before Gottlick potted a goal at 21:14.
Maryland, which has now won 19 straight matches, went on to take a 14-3 lead into halftime and finished up with five second-half goals to Stony Brook's two. The Terrapins were led by Brandi Jones' four goals. Mollison and Karri Ellen Johnson each had three goals and two assists.
Stony Brook will now look towards conference play as it travels to Burlington, Vt., to take on Vermont Sunday at 12 p.m.
