Women's lacrosse stumbles at New Hampshire

April 16, 2011

Final Stats

The Stony Brook women's lacrosse team took a 12-6 loss to New Hampshire Saturday in Durham, N.H., despite three more goals from streaking senior attacker Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.), who now has 10 goals in her last three games.

Djaha now has 23 goals for the season, and with her second goal of the game, she surpassed Carlee Buck (2004-07) for fifth place in program history in career goals. She now has 94 goals, 14 behind teammate Melissa Cook, who is in fourth place with 108.

In addition to Djaha's three goals, Victoria Cable (Oakton, Va.) tallied a pair of goals, and Cook added one to her team-leading 24-goal total. Tara Gerstacker (Manorville, N.Y.) had six ground balls and three caused turnovers to earn America East Player of the Game honors. Courtney Bertolone (Farmingville, N.Y.) added three caused turnovers and two ground balls.

The Seawolves fell behind 5-0 in the match's first seven minutes to dig themselves a bit of a hole. But the team responded with three consecutive tallies, including goals from Cook, Djaha and Cable to make it a 5-3 match. UNH's Ilana Cohen scored with 2:16 remaining in the first half to send the game into halftime at 6-3.

Djaha scored the first goal of the second half to get the Seawolves within two, 6-4, but then both teams went cold on offense for a while. It wasn't until Cohen scored again at 15:46 that either team put in a goal. Eight seconds later, Jenny Simpson scored to put the Wildcats on top 8-4.

Cable notched a goal on an assist from Alyssa Cardillo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to three, 8-5, but New Hampshire went on a 4-0 run to pull away.

Both teams struggled with turnovers on the day. The Seawolves committed 17 to UNH's 16. Neither team put in a free position goal, going a combined 0-for-7 on attempts.

Mickey Cahill made 12 saves in net for the Seawolves. UNH's Kathleen O'Keefe stopped eight shots.

Stony Brook will rebound next Saturday in its home finale vs. Boston University at LaValle Stadium at 1 p.m. The match will be a part of Senior Day, and the Seawolves will honor their nine outgoing seniors Melissa Cook, Victoria Cable, Samantha Djaha, Trish Molfetta, Courtney Bertolone, Jamie Carlson, Abby Juliani, Mickey Cahill and Cori Kennedy.
