Final Stats
The Stony Brook women's lacrosse team celebrated the final home game for nine of its seniors, and a pair of seniors, Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Trish Molfetta (Carmel, N.Y.), each scored a goal in a 12-3 loss to Boston University Saturday at a rainy LaValle Stadium. Freshman Tara Gerstacker (Manorville, N.Y.) added the third goal for the Seawolves.
Prior to the match, Cook, Molfetta, Courtney Bertolone (Farmingville, N.Y.), Victoria Cable (Oakton, Va.), Mickey Cahill (Bay Shore, N.Y.), Jamie Carlson (Glen Cove, N.Y.), Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.), Abby Juliani (Jenkintown, Pa.) and Cori Kennedy (North Babylon, N.Y.) were all honored for playing their final game at LaValle Stadium after four seasons.
Gerstacker finished the game with a goal, two draw controls and three caused turnovers to earn America East Player of the Game honors. Danielle Etrasco was named BU's America East Player of the game after scoring three goals to go with three draw controls, three ground balls and a caused turnover.
Boston University (7-8, 3-2 America East) scored the match's first three goals before Molfetta converted a free position attempt to make it 3-1 in favor of the Terriers. BU went on to score four more goals, including a pair by Molly Swain.
Stony Brook (4-10, 1-5 America East) went into halftime down 7-1 and then came out and scored the first goal of the second half on Cook's tally at 24:07. However, BU proved to be too powerful, putting up another four goals to go up 11-2 before Gerstacker notched her goal with 7:26 remaining in the match.
Between the pipes, Cahill made 10 saves for the Seawolves before giving way to Carlson, who notched two saves in just over eight minutes of action. BU's Christina Sheridan stopped six shots.
Stony Brook struggled with turnovers on the day, committing 22 to BU's 12.
The Seawolves will wrap up the 2011 season next Saturday in a non-conference battle at Yale at 1 p.m.
