Final Stats
The Stony Brook women's lacrosse team ended its 2011 season with a 14-10 loss at Yale Saturday afternoon in New Haven, Conn. Senior Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) capped her Seawolves career with a three-goal day to give her a team-best 28 goals this season.
Besides Cook, seven other Seawolves scored goals in the game, including Victoria Cable (Oakton, Va.), Abby Ford (Baltimore, Md.), Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.), Trish Molfetta (Carmel, N.Y.), Alyssa Cardillo (Farmingdale, N.Y.), Tara Gerstacker (Manorville, N.Y.) and Kaila Gottlick (Madison, Conn.). Ford matched Cook with three points as she also notched a pair of assists.
Stony Brook won the first draw control, but a turnover led to Yale's first goal less than two minutes into the match and sparked a 7-2 Bulldogs run. Casey Ketchum's goal at 11:33 put the Seawolves down by five.
Ford answered 25 seconds later with a goal to get SBU within four, but Yale continued to find the net with three more goals in the half. Gottlick's goal at 3:34 sent the teams into halftime with the score 10-5 in favor of the Bulldogs.
It was 13-7 when Stony Brook clamped down on defense and began a comeback. Cardillo dropped in a goal at the 8:27 mark of the second half. Four minutes later, Cable tallied a goal to make it 13-9. Stony Brook won the draw control, which led to another goal this time from Molfetta off a pass from Courtney Bertolone (Farmingville, N.Y.) to cut the deficit to three, 13-10, with 3:51 remaining.
But that was as close as the Seawolves would come as they could only get one more shot off.
Stony Brook won the draw control battle, 14-12, but committed one more turnover than Yale, 14-13. Stony Brook committed 38 fouls, seven leading to free position attempts, but Yale converted only one of those attempts.
Cook finishes her Stony Brook career with 112 goals, good for fourth place all-time in program history. She also has 147 points, which puts her fifth all-time, and 35 assists, tied for seventh-best all-time. Djaha is right behind Cook in goals with 95 in her career, fifth place all-time. She also is seventh in points (110) and fourth in draw controls (100).
Ford and Cardillo each finished the season with 20 assists, tied for ninth-best in SBU single-season history. Ford has 46 assists in her career, fourth-best in the SBU archives. She has one season of eligibility remaining.
