Final Stats
Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.) scored three goals, and Abby Ford (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in three assists, but the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team lost a close battle to UMBC 10-8 Wednesday afternoon in Baltimore, Md. With her three goals, Djaha became just the eighth player in program history to record 100 career points.
Six different Seawolves tallied goals on the game, including Djaha, Victoria Cable (Oakton, Va.), Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.), Alyssa Cardillo (Farmingdale, N.Y.), Jackie Gentile (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) and Kaitlyn Harrison (West Babylon, N.Y.). Goalkeeper Mickey Cahill (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made 13 saves in the match, including two on free position attempts, and was named America East Player of the Game.
For Djaha, she now has 87 goals and 25 assists for 102 career points, eighth-best among Stony Brook players. Her 87 goals tie her with Diana Caroleo (2005-08) for sixth place all-time at Stony Brook in goals scored. Djaha is also in the top 10 in the program in draw controls (91 - fourth place).
Playing in her native hometown, Ford helped get the Seawolves on the board first with a pass to Cardillo, who found the back of the net just 2:09 into the match. The Seawolves were up 1-0. After UMBC answered with a goal from Alicia Krause, Djaha reached the 100-point plateau with a goal off a pass from Ford. She followed up with a second goal, this time from Cardillo, and then Cook notched a free position goal to put Stony Brook on top 4-1 at the 18:29 mark of the first half.
Krause scored twice more for UMBC before Djaha tallied her third goal of the game, again from Ford, to make it 5-3. Stony Brook won the draw control right after, but UMBC's Natalie Rau made a save on a Cable shot attempt with five minutes left in the first half. A UMBC goal with 1:42 left in the half sent the Seawolves into halftime with a 5-4 lead.
Krause tied the game at 26:55 of the second half, and Cable answered with a goal from Kaila Gottlick (Madison, Conn.) at 25:23 to reclaim the one-goal lead. Krause again tied it at 21:11 only to see Stony Brook immediately win the draw control and come back with Harrison's goal at 19:51 to make it 7-6 Seawolves.
However, the Retrievers then scored four unanswered goals to pull away. Amanda Pappas tied it, and Lindsay Cox put UMBC up for good with a goal on a free position attempt with 15:45 left to play. Gentile made it 10-8 with six minutes left, giving Stony Brook hope, but Rau turned away the Seawolves' final two shots to end her eight-save day.
The Seawolves return home Saturday to host Binghamton at LaValle Stadium at 1 p.m.
