Four Stony Brook teams recognized by NCAA for academics

May 17, 2011

The NCAA publicly recognized four Stony Brook University Athletics teams Tuesday for being one of the top academic teams in the country within their respective sports.

The Seawolves men's cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field and women's outdoor track & field teams all received the Public Recognition Awards that are given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their Academic Progress Rates (APRs). The four honored teams are the most Stony Brook has had in one academic year. In addition, the women's outdoor track & field team has now been honored with the Public Recognition Award for six consecutive years.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced Tuesday, May 24. That announcement also will include immediate and historical penalties for low-performing teams and head coach APRs.

Stony Brook annually receives significant recognition for its academic achievements. Among the honors, the athletics department placed a school-record 61 student-athletes on the America East Fall Honor Roll. Collectively, Stony Brook Athletics student-athletes have finished the academic year with a GPA of over 3.0 for four consecutive years.
