Cambridge, Mass. - Senior Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) was named the America East Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday, as announced by the conference office. Matthes posted a 3-0 record and a 1.75 ERA in four appearances last week, striking out 30 batters in 24 innings pitched.
Matthes opened the week with a complete-game shutout against Quinnipiac on April 27, fanning eight batters and limiting the Bobcats to just two hits in a 2-0 Stony Brook win. Matthes then tossed another complete-game shutout on April 30 in the first game of a doubleheader against Binghamton. The Seawolves won the contest, 3-0, as Matthes struck out nine and allowed only three hits. The senior then returned to the circle in the second game of the doubleheader and pitched another complete game with nine strikeouts in a 6-1 Stony Brook win. In total, Matthes did not allow an earned run in her first 23 innings pitched last week.
Matthes was previously named the America East Pitcher of the Week on March 14. Including Matthes' two honors, the Seawolves have now earned conference weekly honors six times this season. Freshman Elise Fortier (Coventry, R.I.) has been named the America East Rookie of the Week on three occasions, while sophomore Taylor Chain (Gloucester, N.J.) garnered America East Player of the Week honors on April 11 as well.
Matthes split the weekly honor with UMBC's Stephanie Weigman, who also went 3-0 last week and posted 19 strikeouts in 20 innings pitched. The senior now owns a 13-15 record with a 3.07 ERA in 35 appearances this season.
The Seawolves (19-25, 5-10 AE) will wrap up the 2011 season this week when they travel to Seton Hall for a doubleheader on Tuesday, before closing out conference play at Albany this weekend.
