South Orange, N.J. - The Stony Brook softball team will wrap up the non-conference schedule on Tuesday with a trip to Seton Hall for a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
The Seawolves previously faced the Pirates on March 4, and fell by a 2-1 score in eight innings at the Florida Atlantic Miken Classic. Stony Brook jumped out to a 1-0 lead courtesy of a Lauren Maloney (Las Vegas, Nev.) RBI single in the third. Seton Hall tied it in the sixth when a runner scored off a wild pitch and then won it in the eighth on an RBI groundout. Senior Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) pitched seven strong innings, allowing just one earned run, while striking out seven.
Junior Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.) leads the Seawolves (19-25) with a .353 batting average to go along with three home runs and 21 RBI. Tenuto needs just two RBI to tie her previous season-best mark of 23, which she set in 2010. Fresh off a 9-for-16 week, freshman Jessica Combs (Hammonton, N.J.) is now hitting at a .315 clip and leads all Stony Brook freshmen with 17 RBI. Matthes, who was named the America East Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday, owns a 3.07 ERA and 157 strikeouts in the circle.
The Pirates (15-32) are led by Brittany Schillizzi, who is batting .252 with four homers and 17 RBI. Michelle Reed has swiped a team-best 15 bases and leads the team with four triples. In the circle, Jen Metzger boasts a 3.97 ERA to lead the team, while Hannah Hill has eight of Seton Hall's 15 wins.
