The Stony Brook men's basketball team came back from 12 points down with six minutes left to play to make it a one possession game, but the Seawolves were unable to complete the comeback as they fell to the Midnight Madness All-Stars 79-75 Wednesday night at Kingston College Arena.
"We didn't play to the level we're capable of, and it showed," head coach Steve Pikiell said. "We were up against a group of big men, some of them professional players, and we were not able to execute our plays. But I'm glad that we'll have the chance to play again tomorrow night and get better."
It was a back-and-forth game as both teams had their runs. The Seawolves took an early four-point lead, 18-14, after Leonard Hayes was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all three free throws. From there, Madness went on a 12-4 run to open up a six-point lead.
The game remained tight all through the first half, and the score was even at 38-38 at halftime. In the second half, Bryan Dougher put SBU up 60-58 after a three-pointer off a pass from Tommy Brenton, but Madness again went on a 10-0 run to grab a 70-58 lead with six minutes left.
Stony Brook battled back with a 17-8 run to get within one possession, 78-75, but on the team's final play, Madness stole the ball on the inbound, and iced the game with a free throw.
Dallis Joyner led the Seawolves with 14 points. In his return to his native England, Danny Carter scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. He received a warm welcome from the crowd during introductions. Brenton had seven rebounds and six assists. Dougher finished with 11 points and five assists. Hayes and Marcus Rouse each chipped in eight points.
The Seawolves are back in action Thursday night against the Milton Keynes Lions.
