Women's Hoops falls to Maine

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's basketball team fell to the Maine Black Bears, 57-44, in America East conference action on Saturday afternoon at Pritchard Gymnasium.

"I'm proud of the way we competed to end of the game. Give credit to Maine, they executed better than we did on both ends of the floor today," Stony Brook head coach Beth O'Boyle said. "But we'll get back to work tomorrow and get ready for Hartford on Wednesday.

The Seawolves (4-16, 1-6 AE) trailed 51-25 with 7:55 left before scoring 15 straight points to pull within 51-40 with 1:37 remaining.

Junior Dani Klupenger (Aurora, Ore.) then hit two free throws to cut the Maine (5-15, 2-5 AE) lead to 10 but the Black Bears hit five of six free throws over the final minute to put the game away.

Junior Taylor Burner (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) led Stony Brook with 11 points while senior Whitney Davis (Muskegon, Mich.) chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds.

Samantha Baranowski and Corinne Wellington led four Maine players in double-figures with 12 points each. Maine shot 44.7 percent and out-rebounded the Seawolves, 44-30.

Baranowski and Burner were named America East Player's of the Game for their respective teams.

Maine used an early 10-0 run to take a 14-6 lead midway through the first half.

Burner halted the run with an inside hoop but the Black Bears scored 11 of the next 13 points to to go ahead 25-10 with five minutes left in the half.

A three from Klupenger got the Seawolves within 27-16 before Maine scored six straight points to push its lead to 16.

But Stony Brook scored the final four points of the period and went into halftime trailing 33-20.

Maine pushed its lead to 17 just over five minutes into the second half before Klupenger knocked down a three to cut the Stony Brook deficit to 37-23.

But Maine then ran off 12 straight points to take its largest lead of the game.

The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday, traveling to take on Hartford. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
