Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Junior Demmianne Cook (Nesconset, N.Y.) had six goals and freshman Michelle Rubino (East Setauket, N.Y.) added three goals and two assists as the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team topped Colgate, 13-10, in the season opener for both teams.

The victory was Stony Brook's first over Colgate since 2008.

"I felt like we were waiting for this game for years," said coach Joe Spallina, who earned his first Division I win. "We started six freshmen and three sophomores, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm real proud of the team's effort."

Cook scored five of her six goals in the first half as the Seawolves held an 8-3 lead. Junior Janine Hillier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored unassisted with 7:35 left in the first half to give Stony Brook its biggest lead of the game, 9-3.

Colgate, which was led by Courtney Miller's four goals and one assist, scored three unanswered goals to trail the Seawolves, 9-6, at halftime.

After Rubino made it 10-6, Colgate cut the deficit to 10-8 after goals from Amanda O'Sullivan and Miller.

Sophomore Frankie Caridi (East Northport, N.Y.), who made five saves, stopped shots from Kate Sheridan and Monica White to preserve the two-goal lead. Caridi's save on White ignited a fast break, and Cook answered just over a minute later with her sixth goal of the game.

Colgate got within two at 16:08 and 8:55 of the second half, but goals from sophomore Emily Mercier (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and Rubino helped the Seawolves hold off the Raiders.

Rubino and Cook had four ground balls and three draw controls apiece. Freshman Amber Kupres (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) added a first-half goal.

Sheridan had a game-high four assists for Colgate.

Stony Brook continues its three-game home stand against Manhattan on Wednesday, February 15 at 4 p.m.
