UMBC tops women's hoops, 63-51

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Junior Jessica Previlon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a career-high 16 points and tied a career-best with 11 rebounds but Erin Brown scored a game-high 21 points to lead the UMBC Retrievers to a 63-51 victory over the Stony Brook women's basketball team on Wednesday at Pritchard Gymnasium.

"I thought we played with great energy tonight after a slow start and we did a good job on the glass especially on the offensive end," Stony Brook head coach Beth O'Boyle said. "But we just didn't make enough stops defensively."

It was first career double-double for Previlon, who went 7-for-10 from the field and also blocked two shots.

Senior Whitney Davis (Muskegon, Mich.) tallied 16 points for the second straight game and senior Tamiel Murray (Teaneck, N.J.) added seven assists and eight rebounds.

Brown also pulled down nine rebounds for UMBC, while Tope Obajolu and Michelle Kurowski each chipped in with 14 points.

SBU won the battle of the boards, 38-29 including 12 on the offensive end but the Retrievers shot 44 percent and scored 16 points off 16 Stony Brook turnovers.

Previlon and Brown were named America East Players of the Game for their respective teams.

UMBC (13-12, 7-5 AE) jumped on the Seawolves (4-21, 1-11 AE) at the start, scoring the first 13 points of the game. Stony Brook cut the the Retriever lead to 19-9 just past the midway point of the half on a free throw from Previlon.

But Brown and Kurowski then sandwiched a pair of threes around a hoop from Previlon to push the UMBC lead to 25-11 with five minutes to go in the half.

Stony Brook answered with a 12-2 run though, cutting the Retriever lead to five on a three from junior Sam Landers (Springfield, Va.) with two minutes left.

A Kurowski lay-up ended the SBU run but junior Dani Klupenger (Aurora, Ore.) hit two free throws with 3.9 seconds left as UMBC took a 29-24 lead into halftime.

Davis hit a jumper on the first possession of the second half to bring SBU within three. UMBC then scored 11 of the next 14 points though to take take a 40-29 advantage.

SBU got back within nine on a jumper from senior Destiny Jacobs (Glen Burnie, Md.) but UMBC out-scored the Seawolves, 10-4, over the next five minutes to take a 52-37 advantage with 7:24 remaining.

Stony Brook got no closer than 13 the rest of the way as the Retrievers held on for their second straight victory.

The Seawolves return to action on Saturday, traveling to take on first-place Boston University. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
