Final Stats

College Park, Md. - Junior Claire Petersen (Wantagh, N.Y.) posted a five-point night, and freshman Amber Kupres (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) notched her third hat trick of the season, but the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team took a 21-7 loss to No. 4/5 Maryland Tuesday at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

This was Stony Brook's fourth consecutive game against a nationally ranked opponent. The Seawolves slip to 5-3 overall while Maryland improves to 8-2. Despite Maryland's margin of victory, the Seawolves had numerous opportunities to score, but were stonewalled by a mighty effort from Terrapins goalkeeper Brittany Dipper. She made 11 saves in 47 minutes of action, including nine in the first half.

Petersen recorded her five points on a goal and four assists. Three of her assists came in the first half, keeping the Seawolves within one goal of the Terrapins early on. Two of Kupres' goals came on Petersen assists. Junior Janine Hillier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) added two goals, and freshman Michelle Rubino (East Setauket, N.Y.) chipped in a goal and an assist while winning seven draw controls.

Maryland was led by Alex Aust, who had five goals and an assist. Katie Schwartzman added four goals.

Maryland scored the match's first three goals before Kupres put Stony Brook on the board at the 21:24 mark. Maryland went up 4-1 before Kupres and Rubino both scored on Petersen passes to make it 4-3 with 12:39 to go before halftime.

Stony Brook had a chance to tie the game, but a Petersen shot was turned away by Dipper. In transition, Schwartzman scored to make it a two-goal game. Maryland went on to score the next seven goals to pull away, including five before the end of the first half to go into halftime leading 9-3.

The Terrapins eventually went up 20-5 before Kupres and Petersen scored again late in the match.

Stony Brook will return to action at home on Saturday against Marist at 1 p.m.
