Bethlehem, Pa. -
Sophomore Eric Speakman, in his second race of the season, finished second (25:05) in the men's Brown 8K at the Paul Short Run, hosted by Lehigh University on Friday. The men's team took third overall.
"The guys had a nice run, led by Eric," coach Andy Ronan said. "He just mistimed his last move, otherwise I think he would have won the race. He got good support from juniors Carlos Roa, Daniel Denis and Nicholas Lemon. This was a positive performance for the guys; they competed well and I think once we get everyone healthy and competing, we will have a team that may surprise some people."
The aforementioned Roa placed 13th (25:39), and was followed by Denis (30th - 26:06) and Lemon (50th - 26:22).
Junior Olivia Burne placed 32nd (21:04) to lead the women's team in the Gold 6K.
"This was our first venture into regional and inter-regional competition this season," Ronan said. "I felt we handled it well, considering we have a young team. Two of our five scorers were freshmen, and they were running the longest cross country race of their careers so far. Olivia had a nice run up front for us. I feel this race will help prepare us for the meets ahead, in particular the championship season that starts in four weeks."
Junior Annie Keown placed 63rd (21:41). Freshman Christina Melian finished 68th (21:45), junior Lorraine McCarthy took 75th (21:52) and freshman Tara Peck crossed in 105th (22:11).
The season continues in two weeks at the Princeton Invitational on October 13.
