Outlook
Stony Brook's quarterback connection to southern California continues as senior Lyle Negron takes over the reins from Kyle Essington. A native of Bakersfield, Calif., Negron was anointed the starter after winning the job during spring practice.
Negron saw time in a back-up role for most of 2012, but was thrusted into action against Villanova after a knee injury to Essington. Negron proved to be the game manager head coach Chuck Priore was looking for, guiding an offense that held the ball for nearly 40 minutes.
"I thought Lyle handled the Villanova game as if he'd been the starter for the last four years," Priore said. "Mistakes didn't bother him. He controlled the game the way we teach our quarterbacks to do."
Behind Negron on the depth chart are redshirt freshmen Pat D'Amato and Carlos Hernandez and junior Conor Bednarski.
D'Amato and Hernandez are a year wiser, having spent a full season learning the nuances of Priore's offense. Bednarski joined the Seawolves for the start of spring practice. All three players will compete to be Negron's back-up.
Final Thoughts
With Negron status solidified as the starter, the competition between D'Amato, Hernandez and Bednarski will be exciting as Stony Brook's signal callers are positioning themselves for future playing time.
