Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook Men's Basketball took time out last week to visit with a group of scholars. The Seawolves met members of the Freedom School, Stony Brook's summer enrichment program designed to reach underserved youth by providing a learning environment that provides structure, brings communities and families together and uses the best practices of teaching to engage children in learning.

The Seawolves contributed to this philosophy by putting on "Basketball 101," a clinic that included historical information about the game of basketball and active drills on how to make a layup, how to defend, how to pass and how to dribble the basketball. Then the rising third graders put their minds to the test by answering questions on the lessons they learned throughout the clinic, followed by "graduation" from the class, complete with diplomas for each student.

"We are proud to have met some outstanding, bright young scholars last week who are clearly headed for a great future," Stony Brook men's basketball head coach Steve Pikiell said. "We are honored that Dr. [Charles] Robbins asked us to participate and excited to interact with so many future Seawolves. Our student-athletes take great pride in engaging with members of the community, and they will remember their time with the Freedom School scholars fondly."
