Princeton, N.J. -
Junior Christina Melian of the Stony Brook women's cross country team clocked in at 21:12 for a second-place finish Saturday in the Princeton Invitational. Senior Eric Speakman impressed for the men, taking third in an 8k time of 24:05.

"We had two very good individual performances today," Stony Brook cross country head coach Andy Ronan said. "Christina made her last move for the win just a little late, but it was a great effort overall. Eric entered the finishing straight with three other athletes and just missed the win by a couple of seconds. Again, it was a great effort."

Sophomore Olivia Ritchie completed the women's 6k 28th in 22:20. Sophomore Elizabeth Caldwell and junior Tara Peck were neck-and-neck at the finish, securing 38th and 39th, respectively, in 22:33.

Freshman Tiana Guevera continued her solid rookie season with a 49th-place result in 22:37.

Stony Brook placed fourth out of 35 women's teams and first among America East opponents with 156 points. Villanova (58 points), Virginia Tech (63 points) and University of Pennsylvania (122 points) accounted finished first, second and third in that order.

"As a team, the ladies competed very well and made progress in their preparation for the championship season which starts in two weeks," Ronan said.

Freshman Michael Watts, who tallied a time of 25:19 and placed 66th, was the men's top finisher outside of Speakman. The Seawolves were 20th out of 37 teams with 540 points.

"Our men struggled," Ronan said. "We have a young group, and they are going through some growing pains. However, I am optimistic we can pull something out at the conference meet in a couple of weeks."
