Cambridge, Mass. - Senior Eric Speakman and junior Christina Melian of the Stony Brook men's and women's cross country teams have been named America East Performers of the Week.
Speakman placed third Saturday at the Princeton Invitational in an 8k time of 24:05, marking his second top-three finish in three meets this season. He previously won the Stony Brook Opener, a 6k, in 16:02.65 Saturday, Aug. 30.
The honor is the second of the season for Speakman, who was named America East Performer of the Week Tuesday, Sept. 30 after pacing all conference runners at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown Friday, Sept. 26.
Melian picks up the first weekly honor of her career after racing to her third top-two finish of the season by completing the 6k in 21:12. The Staten Island, N.Y., product won the Stony Brook Opener, a 4k, in 14:31.98.
Melian has thrived against top competition. First, she beat out members of defending national champion Providence with a 5k time of 18:37.36 for first in the Wolfie Invite Saturday, Sept. 13. She came in 14th out of 207 runners at the first national meet of the season, the 5k Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown.
Stony Brook will race in the CCSU Mini-Meet Friday at 3 p.m. as a final tune-up for the America East Championships slated for Saturday, Nov. 1 in Orono, Maine.
