Riverdale, N.Y. — Junior Christina Melian of the Stony Brook women’s cross country team added to her mantle with an All-Region performance at the NCAA Northeast Regional Friday in Van Cortlandt Park. Melian placed 15th in the field of 275 runners in a 6k time of 20:44.95.

The All-Region honor is the first of Melian’s career.

“Christina had a great run,” Stony Brook cross country head coach Andy Ronan said. “She put every ounce of energy in to her performance. Unfortunately, while she achieved All-Region honors, she is just going to fall short of her main goal which was to qualify for the NCAA Championships. She will most likely miss out by two spots. She will gain experience from this run, and it will help her to prepare for the next opportunity to make the NCAA finals.”

Junior Tara Peck clocked in at 21:44.36 for 69th. The women came in 15th out of 40 programs with 475 points.

Iona and Providence were first and second, respectively, and earned qualifiers into the NCAA Championship.

Junior Mitchell Kun was the top finisher for the men, placing 79th out of 261 competitors in a 10k time of 31:53.13.

The men tallied 563 points and finished 19th out of 39 teams. Syracuse and Providence claimed the two NCAA Championship team automatic qualifiers.

“Teamwise, we are disappointed with our performances,” Ronan said. “Both teams fell short of their goals. The regional championships are tough. You have to be ready physically and mentally. Both teams found that out today. Both teams need to learn from this experience and use it as motivation to get better.”
