Crossbar dooms Seawolves in 1-0 loss at Hartford

Oct. 1, 2015

Final Stats

West Hartford, Conn. - Trailing 1-0 in the second half, the Stony Brook women's soccer team (3-7-2, 0-2-0 AE) hit the crossbar on two separate occasions, failing to find the tying goal in a 1-0 loss at Hartford (7-2-2, 1-0-1 AE).

Ryan's Reaction

"We had a very competitive conference game tonight", said head coach Sue Ryan. "We battled hard but could not get on the scoreboard. We have to work on that aspect of our game and move forward to the next game."

Highlights

  • Hayley Nolan scored the game's first and only goal in the 14th minute, receiving a pass on top of the box, turning, and finishing inside the far post.
  • Sophomore Christen Cahill (Pembroke, Mass.) appeared to have tied the match early in the second half when her left-footed shot struck the bottom of the crossbar and bounded straight down. The Seawolves celebrated as if the ball had crossed the goal line, but the linesman waved off the goal.
  • Senior Tessa Devereaux (Fayetteville, N.Y.) had the final chance to tie the match with three minutes to play on a free kick from 25 yards out. She tested the keeper with a firm effort on goal, but the Hartford goalkeeper did just enough to deflect the shot off the bar.
Notes
  • Stony Brook outshot Hartford 12-8 for the match and 7-4 in the second half.
  • The Seawolves also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Cahill came off the bench to post a team-high three shots.
  • Devereaux and redshirt junior Raven Edwards (West Orange, N.J.) each notched two shots.
  • After going eight consecutive games with a goal, the Seawolves are now trapped in a streak of 193 minutes without finding the back of the net.
  • Junior Emily Doherty (Oceanside, N.Y.) made four saves in the loss.
