Stony Brook tops in FCS in total defense

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- With the FCS regular season in the books, the Stony Brook football can lay claim to having one the nation's top defensive units once again. The Seawolves finished in the top 10 in eight defensive statistical categories, including ranking first in total defense.

Stony Brook held opponents to a nation's best 250.1 yards per game, including not allowing any of the final three opponents of the season to over 160 yards. The Seawolves' won all three of the final games after holding Howard to 109 yards, Rhode Island to 135 yards and UAlbany to 160 yards.

The Seawolves also placed second in the nation in sacks with 4.10 per game, second in first down defense with 145 allowed, fourth in passing yards allow at 145.5 per contest, sixth in scoring defense with 15.7 points per game, ninth in tackles for a loss with 8.3 per game, ninth in fourth down conversion percentage defense at 0.287 and ninth in red zone defense 0.640 percent.

Senior DE Victor Ochi (Valley Stream, N.Y.) was one of the anchors of the Seawolves' defense and was named the CAA Football Co-Defensive Player of the Year after leading the nation with 13.0 sacks per game and placing tops in the league with 16.5 tackles for loss. Junior DL Aaron Thompson (Deer Park, N.Y.) and sophomore LB Tyrice Beverette (Lakewood, N.J.) also earned All-CAA Football honors.
