STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook's football team held the end-of-the-season Grant Family Banquet inside the Island Federal Credit Union on campus Sunday afternoon. Head coach Chuck Priore, who completed his 10th season, spoke about the 2015 campaign and handed out the team's awards.
The Ernest Owusu Offensive MVP went to sophomore receiver Ray Bolden (Euless, Texas) who led the Seawolves with 68 receptions, 765 yards and five touchdowns on his way to being named first team All-CAA Football. His 68 catches led the conference as well as placed him third on SBU's single-season list. Bolden also posted three 100-plus yard games, including a career-best 112 in the win over UAlbany.
Senior Victor Ochi (Valley Stream, N.Y.) was named Stony Brook's Defensive MVP award. The defensive end received the CAA Football Co-Defensive Player of the Year honor after leading the nation with 13.0 sacks and was tops in the conference with 16.5 tackles for a loss. Ochi recorded 47 tackles in the Seawolves' 10 games, including his sacks total that was the second most in a single season in the program's history.
Senior Chris Makulik (Medford, N.Y.) garnered Ray Downey Special Teams MVP. Makulik played in eight games and was a member of kick/kick return teams and punt/punt return teams. He collected four tackles, including some big hits that sparked the Seawolves.
The Offensive Rookie of the Year went to redshirt freshman RB Donald Liotine (Medford, N.Y.). Liotine was twice named the CAA Football Rookie of the Week during the season and led the Seawolves with 157 carries, 708 yards and five touchdowns. He closed out the season with three straight 100-plus yard games, including 204 yards against Howard and 203 against UAlbany.
Redshirt freshman LB Shayne Lawless (Moorestown, N.J.) was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year. Lawless collected 29 tackles, had 4.5 tackles for a loss, 2.0 sacks, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 10 games for the Seawolves.
Junior OL Mike White (East Islip, N.Y.) won the Fred Kemp Award, given to the upperclassman who is dedicated to excellence on and off the field, while leading the team with pride and intensity.
The Mark Motroni Award, which goes to the upperclassman who demonstrates great pride in the Stony Brook football program and consistently exhibits unselfish dedication to the team, was awarded to senior QB and 2015 team captain Conor Bednarski (South Pasadena, Calif.).
Senior C and 2015 team captain Jerry Hubshman (Dunmore, Pa.) received the Frank Conti `11 Work Horse Award and senior LB Julian Quintin (East Brunswick, N.J.) earned the Academic Achievement Award. Quintin will graduate in two weeks with a degree in socioligy and will continue in the mba program.
Priore also announced the captains for the 2016 season. The five include seniors DL Aaron Thompson (Deer Park, N.Y.), DB Jaheem Woods (Neptune, N.J.) and WR Tim Keith (Manassas, Va.) and juniors RB Stacey Bedell (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) and LB Tyrice Beverette (Lakewood, N.J.).
