Head Coach Caroline McCombs’ reaction
On the game
“I thought we had a good game plan coming in. We thought if we held Maine to under 60 points, that would be key for us in trying to get the win on their home court. I thought we did a pretty good job defensively, more so in the second half than in the first. Unfortunately, we just weren’t able to make some shots late in the second half.”
On what makes Stony Brook a tough matchup for Maine
“I like our team and our versatility. I can put different players in different positions to cause some mismatch problems and get them out of the zone that they like to play so much.”
Turning Point
Trailing by nine, 37-28, at 17:05 of the second half, Stony Brook went on a 10-2 run and pulled to within one, 39-38, when Snow converted a three-point play with 10:30 left. Koizar answered with a bucket, but Bayne-Walker put Maine’s lead back at one, 42-41, on a layup at the 9:32 mark.
A Courtney Anderson jumper and Sophie Weckstrom layup extended Black Bears’ advantage to 45-40 with 7:37 to play.
Bayne-Walker knocked down three of four free throws and cut the deficit to two, 45-43, at 4:15.
Liz Wood missed a jump shot with 2:25 remaining, but Koizar knocked the ball away from Kim Hanlon and was fouled going in for a layup. Koizar hit both free throws and then five more over the next 90 seconds to put Maine in front, 52-45, with 55 ticks on the clock.
