Boston, Mass. -
Junior Jameel Warney (Plainfield, N.J.) was named America East Player of the Year, the conference announced Monday morning. Warney, who leads the conference in points, rebounds and blocks, tied a conference record with eight America East Player of the Week awards.
Warney is only the sixth player in history to be a multiple winner of the Kevin Roberson Player of the year, joining the likes of Reggie Lewis (Northeastern), Malik Rose (Drexel), Speedy Claxton (Hofstra) Taylor Coppenrath and Marqus Blakely (Vermont) and Jamar Wilson (Albany). Since his arrival at Stony Brook in 2012, Warney has garnered America East Rookie of the Year and back-to-back Player of the Year awards.
Warney's honor makes it the fourth time in the last six years that a Seawolf has won the conference's highest award. In addition to Warney, Tommy Brenton won in 2012-13 and Muhammad El-Amin in 2009-10.
Warney, who's averaging 16.3 points, leads the nation with 20 double-doubles and ranks fifth in the nation with an average of 11.4 rebounds per game. The last America East player to average a double-double was Blakely in 2007-08 season. Additionally, Warney scored in double figures in 28 of 31 games, including 12 of the last 13 to close out the season.
In addition to Player of the Year, Warney also was named the Defensive Player of the Year and was placed on the America East first and All-Defensive team. Joining Warney on the first team was junior Carson Puriefoy (Wenonah, N.J.), who ranked fourth in the conference in scoring (13.9 ppg) and second in assists (3.4 apg), both of which were career-highs. He eclipsed the 20-point plateau in six games, including a career-high 27 points at Binghamton. The Seawolves were 18-5 when he scored in double figures. This marks Puriefoy's first nod as a first-team selection. He was a second-team selection in 2013-14.
Junior Rayshaun McGrew (Chicago, Ill.), who averaged 3.4 points and 1.9 rebounds as a sophomore, earned third-team honors after averaging 8.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest. He recorded nine double-doubles, which ranks second on the team, and finished second behind Warney in rebounding.
Stony Brook, seeded third in the America East Playoffs, will host No. 6 Binghamton Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
