Seawolves seek regular-season title with four games in three days

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team (25-14, 11-2 AE) will play four games in three days in its quest for back-to-back regular-season championships. The Seawolves travel to LIU Brooklyn on Thursday, Apr. 30 at 4 p.m. before closing out their regular season at home with a three-game set vs. UMBC from May 1-2. If the Seawolves take a game vs. UMBC or Maine loses a game vs. Binghamton they are guaranteed the regular-season crown and will host the America East Tournament the weekend of May 7-9.

Scouting the Blackbirds

The Blackbirds are 18-28 overall and in a battle for the final spot in the NEC playoffs with an 8-6 conference mark. Whitney West leads the club with 44 hits and a .319 batting average, while Victoria Zamora is batting .316 with 37 hits. Nicole Archer is a dangerous power threat, leading the team with eight home runs and 28 rbi. The pitching staff owns a staff era of 6.18.

Scouting the Retrievers

UMBC enters the weekend in a fight for a spot in the conference tournament. They currently sit in fifth place with an 8-6 conference record and 22-24 overall record. Five starters are hitting over .300 and they are hitting .298 as a team. Tori Alexander is the leading hitter, batting .409, while leading the conference with 56 hits. Taylor Hall has slugged a team-high six home runs and sports a .400 average. Jessica Holte is the ace of the pitching staff with a 13-10 record, 2.56 era and 99 strikeouts.

Green in the Record Books

Senior Bria Green (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) etched her name in the Stony Brook record book on Tuesday with her 18th homer of the season, passing Hayley Durham's single-season record set in 2006. Green could capture another record this weekend as she is just two rbi shy of the single-season rbi mark of 50, set by Kristen Brust in 2004. Green currently leads the America East in home runs (18), rbi (48), slugging pct. (.992), batting average (.444) and total bases (123). Not only is she among the America East statistical leaders, but she also ranks highly in many national rankings. Her .46 home runs/game is currently seventh-best in the country, while her slugging pct. ranks 9th.

Power Up

The Stony Brook offense has posted impressive power numbers, ranking first in the America East in home runs with 52. In fact, the 2015 Seawolves broke the Stony Brook single-season team home run record of 47 with senior Shayla Giosia's seventh inning home run vs. Seton Hall.  They rank 22nd in the nation with an average of 1.33 home runs per game. Green leads the conference with 18 home runs, while senior Giosia is second with 10. Nine different players have registered a home run this season.

Conference Domination

The Seawolves have won 12 consecutive conference series dating back to 2013 when they were swept by Binghamton. Since then, they are 27-4 in regular season conference games. Sitting at 11-2 in America East play, the Seawolves have assured themselves of a winning record in conference play, making it four years in a row they have finished above a .500 record in conference play.

Senior Day Celebration

Before Saturday's noon start, the Seawolves will honors four seniors who have had outstanding careers in Green, Giosia, Allison Cukrov (Irvine, Calif.) and Lauren Kamachi. Green and Giosia both rank in the top 5 in career doubles, total bases, rbi, home runs and runs scored, while Giosia is also second in career hits. Cukrov is the career leader in appearances, shutouts and saves, while ranking second in wins, innings pitched, strikeouts and complete games. Kamachi has enjoyed a career-best senior season, setting new-highs with four home runs and 14 rbi.
