New Orleans - Stony Brook women’s cross country junior Christina Melian (Staten Island, N.Y.) has tallied an impressive collection of accolades from her Friday performance, as the Seawolf runner was named Division I National Athlete of the Week Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) and America East Performer of the Week Tuesday.
Melian won the Coast to Coast Battle in Beantown Friday at Boston’s Franklin Park with a time of 16:50 in the women’s 5K. Melian held off a field that included four nationally ranked teams and eight of the top 10 teams in the Northeast Region rankings.
“Christina had a great run against a quality field,” said head coach Andy Ronan following Friday’s meet. “This performance certainly puts her in the group of athletes that have a chance to qualify as an individual for the NCAA Championships.”
The America East Performer of the Week award for Melian is her second of 2015, as she also took home the honor Sept. 9.
The Seawolves will host the America East Championships on the Stony Brook campus Saturday, Oct. 31. Stony Brook will be back in action Oct. 16-17 with the Rothenburg Run in Warwick, Rhode Island and the Pre-National Meet at Louisville.
