Seawolves gut out 69-60 overtime win at UMBC

Baltimore, Md. - For the third time in its last four games the Stony Brook women's basketball team (11-5, 3-0 AE) mounted a second-half rally. Sparked by 15 points and 12 rebounds from junior Christa Scognamiglio (Orangeburg, N.Y.), the Seawolves downed UMBC (10-7, 1-3 AE) 69-60 in overtime, despite trailing by 13 points in the second half.

Turning Point

Stony Brook trailed 39-26 with 6:49 to play in the third quarter before closing the period on a 16-2 run. Freshman Davion Wingate (Atlanta, Ga.) and redshirt sophomore Elizabeth Manner (Vienna, Va.) each had five points during the run.

Inside the Numbers

  • Stony Brook hit a season-high 10 three-pointers on 25 attempts (40.0 %). Scognamiglio led the charge with a season-high four triples, while sophomore Aaliyah Worley (Philadelphia, Pa.) and senior Kim Hanlon (White Plains, N.Y.) each had two.
  • Stony Brook's bench proved to be the difference in the game, outscoring UMBC's 19-0. Worley and Manner did all the damage, finishing with 10 and nine points respectively. The ten points for Worley are a career-high.
  • Stony Brook attempted 24 free throws, converting 17 (70.8 %). The Retrievers went 9-14 from the foul line (64.3 %). Wingate was a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe for the Seawolves.
  • Stony Brook, led by Scognamiglio's 12 and eight from Wingate and fellow freshman Ogechi Anyagaligbo (Miami, Fla.), outrebounded the Retrievers 47-40.

  • Wingate flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
  • Stony Brook scored the first 10 points of overtime to cruise to victory. Snow and Worley split the load, each scoring five during the run.
  • Stony Brook improves its win streak to seven games and is off to a perfect 3-0 start in conference play.
  • The last time the Seawolves made eight or more three-pointers was also vs. UMBC last season on Feb. 11.
  • The Seawolves are 9-2 when holding their opponents under 70 points and 7-0 when holding them to 60 or fewer.
  • Scognamiglio recorded her second career double-double and the 12th by a Stony Brook player this season.
