Seawolves edged at Maine, 55-52

Final Stats

Orono, Maine - Junior Christa Scognamiglio (Orangeburg, N.Y.) netted a game-high 16 points, including four three-pointers, but her game-tying three point shot in the final seconds fell wide as the Stony Brook women's basketball team (13-7, 5-2 AE) was edged at Maine (14-7, 5-1 AE), 55-52.

Turning Point

Stony Brook's hot-shooting first half simmered in the third quarter as the Seawolves had more turnovers (8) than field goal attempts (6) in the period and were held to just seven points. Maine capitalized, turning a 30-29 Stony Brook halftime lead into a 43-37 advantage in favor of the Black Bears. Stony Brook would trail by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter before rallying to have a chance to tie in the game's final possession.

Inside the Numbers

  • The Seawolves hit 18-of-39 field goal attempts (46.2%) for the game, while holding the Black Bears to 19-of-55 (34.5%) shooting. 
  • Led by Scognamiglio, Stony Brook knocked down 6-of-17 three-point field goals (35.3%). Maine went 6-of-19 (31.6%) from behind the arc.
  • The Seawolves struggled early from the free throw line, but made them down the stretch to finish 10-of-18 (55.6%) from the line. Maine finished 11-of-14 (78.6%) from the stripe.
  • Maine converted 20 Stony Brook turnovers into 21 points.
  • Stony Brook outrebounded the Black Bears 34-27 for the game. Freshman Ogechi Anyagaligbo (Miami, Fla.) secured eight rebounds in the loss.

Notes
  • Scognamiglio, freshman Davion Wingate (Atlanta, Ga.) and senior Brittany Snow (Shamong, N.J.) all logged 40 minutes. In addition to 16 from Scognamiglio, Wingate added 13 points and Snow recorded 12.
  • Stony Brook held the America East's fourth-leading scorer, Sigi Koizar, to just four points on 1-of-6 shooting.
  • Over the course of the 40 minutes, the lead changed hands 11 times.
  • Maine improved to 7-0 at home this season. The three-point victory was its narrowest margin of victory at home all season.
