Stony Brook looks for strong finish to regular season

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook women's soccer team is looking to finish the regular season strong as it faces a pair of the league's top four teams. The Seawolves will start the week of play at New Hampshire on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m., before returning home for Senior Day to host Hartford on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m.

New Hampshire currently sits in fourth in America East with a 3-2-1 record, 6-6-3 overall. The Wildcats are looking to bounce back from a two-game skid after falling twice on the road last week in overtime. After a 2-1 double overtime decision at Albany, New Hampshire dropped a 1-0 contest at Maine on Sunday. Brooke Murphy leads the Wildcat offense with nine goals and three assists on the year. Mimi Borkan has made all 15 starts in goal for New Hampshire, boasting a 1.07 goals against average and a .845 save percentage.

The Hawks enter the week with a 10-4-1 record on the year and are tied for second in the league with a 4-1-1 record. They will travel to Vermont for a midweek game before arriving on Long Island. Hartford is coming off of a 2-0 win against UMass Lowell on Sunday. Tori Tripp leads the Hawks with five goals and five assists, while Julia Carr and Kaila Lozada add five goals and four assists each. Jessica Jurg has recorded six shutouts on the year with a 1.05 GAA and .729 save percentage. As a team, the Hawks are outscoring their opponent 33-16 on the season.
 
Senior Day
Sunday will mark the final regular season game in LaValle Stadium for this year's seniors, Raven Edwards, Christina Fluman, Hannah Groth, Lindsay Hutchinson, Lauren Kovalchuk, Amy Thompson and Priscilla Wiggins. These seven seniors have combined to play in 335 games and make 220 starts. As a class they have scored 37 goals and assisted 21 more, while helping to notch 23 shutouts, including seven this season.  This group has helped the Seawolves string together a program-record five straight wins in their final season and will lead the squad to its third America East playoff appearance in their time at Stony Brook.
 
Keeping the Streak Alive
Stony Brook has tallied a program Division I record five straight wins in conference play to position itself at the top of the standings entering the final week of the regular season. The previous best was set in 2009 when the Seawolves strung together four consecutive victories. Stony Brook did not allow a goal last week, and has given up just two goals through its last five games.
 
Gallagher Named America East Performer of the Week
Sophomore goalie Cara Gallagher was named America East Performer of the Week this week after another stellar week in league play. She notched back-to-back shutouts last week to up her season total to seven, while adding five saves on 11 shots. She has shut out the opponent in five of her last six appearances.
 
Comfortable At Home
The Seawolves will look to make it six straight victories at LaValle Stadium on Sunday. Stony Brook has scored 12 goals in its last five games at home, allowing just one. Gallagher has made 18 saves and allowed just one goal during the stint, while seven different Stony Brook players have scored a goal.
