Kingsville, Md. - The Stony Brook men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Kingsville, Maryland, for the America East Cross Country Championships, Saturday, Oct. 29, on the UMBC campus.Â
Â
The day will begin with the men's 8K race at 10 a.m., followed by the women's 5K to follow at 11 a.m. The Seawolves will look to knock off the 2015 champions, UMass Lowell from the men's side and New Hampshire from the women's side. Â
Â
"We are excited about Saturday as I am sure the other conference teams are. Both our teams have worked hard since the beginning of the summer to be ready to challenge for the conference title. At this point I feel that both teams are in position fitness-wise to be in the mix for the No. 1 spot. The men have had a smoother road with their preparation; they have stayed healthy which has allowed them to train consistently week-in and week-out. I am also pleased with the progress we have made from race to race," said head coach
Andy Ronan.
Â
"In order for us to attain the goal of winning the America East, we need our front three of
Cameron Avery,
Nick Cruz and
Danny Connelly to race well up front for us. If they all can finish in the top eight, then we will be in contention. Ultimately it is going to come down to the four and five men on the teams involved in the title race. For us we need
Bryce Hedman,
Chris Biondi and
Kyle Kelly to be on their game. If they can produce the kind of runs we feel they have in them, then we will be very much in the equation for the title. I also expect to get strong supporting performances from
Vann Moffett,
Darian Sorouri, and
Matthew Lee. These three guys are fit enough to impact the team result, " continued Ronan.Â
Â
"On the women's side, while we are getting a boost by having
Christina Melian back in the team, it has been a bit of a bumpy ride trying to get the nine athletes we wanted on the starting line for Saturday. Christina is working herself back into racing shape. At this point, I think she is about three to four weeks away from the fitness level she had this time last year. Having said that, Christina is one of the toughest competitors that I have had the pleasure of coaching, and she will not give up her individual title easily.
Christine Eisenberg and
Annika Sisson have been racing very well throughout the season, Eisenberg is having her best cross country season ever. Both these young ladies need to back up Christina and finish within the top six, then we need big runs from Ally Ortega, Liz Caldwell and
Tiana Guevara to beat UNH and UMass Lowell for the title. Other keys performers could be
Megan Cooney,
Clodagh O'Reilly and
Talia Guevara. All have the potential to produce a big run on the day that could have a positive influence on the result of the race for us," said Ronan.
Â
The day's events will be streamed on AmericaEast.tv with Jon Versteeg on the call. The awards ceremony will follow at noon.
