Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Duval, Espinoza team up to knock off No. 25 UNH, 2-0

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Juniors Thibault Duval (Liege, Belgium) and Danny Espinoza (East Meadow, N.Y.) teamed up for two goals just 2:08 apart to lift the Stony Brook men's soccer team (6-3-2, 1-1 AE) to a 2-0 win over No. 25 New Hampshire (9-3, 1-1 AE) on Saturday night. It was the first home win for the Seawolves over a nationally-ranked team since a 1-0 win over Vermont in 2005.

Anatol's Reaction
"I thought it was a really good performance," said head coach Ryan Anatol. "The guys worked really hard and defended well. We knew New Hampshire was a really good team but we wanted to make it difficult for them to play. I thougt we did that and scored two really good goals."

Highlights
  • New Hampshire had most of the ball, but neither team created a scoring chance until Duval put the Seawolves ahead 1-0 on their first shot of the game. Espinoza went on a run from his right back position and found Duval with a seam pass with the outside of his foot to send him in on goal. Duval calmly flicked his shot past the sliding Wildcat keeper for his third goal of the year.
  • It took just two minutes for Espinoza and Duval to hook up again. Espinoza dribbled around a defender and sent a cross across the face of goal that Duval directed for his second tally.
  • New Hampshire's Chris Wingate had New Hampshire's first opportunity of the second half but was denied by a diving save from junior goalkeeper Tom McMahon (Nassau Bay, Texas).
  • The Seawolves had a chance to take a three-goal lead when junior Vince Erdei's (Budapest, Hungary) header was saved and the rebound fell to freshman Jarred Dass (Marabella, Trinidad), but he hit his shot into the side-netting from six yards out.
  • Senior Lars Togstad (Trondheim, Norway) put Stony Brook defense's commitment on full display with a sliding block of a Chris Arling shot from 8 yards out to help the Seawolves nail down the shutout over the top-ranked scoring offense in the America East.
Notes
  • New Hampshire outshot Stony Brook 14-6 for the match, but only forced McMahon into three saves.
  • Duval's two-goal game was the second of his career. His first came against Sacred Heart as a freshman in 2014. All four of his goals this season have come in Stony Brook's three home games.
  • Espinoza recorded his first multi-point game of his career.
  • Freshman Chris McAuliff (Sayville, N.Y.) made his collegiate debut, logging three minutes in the first half.
  • The Seawolves have won their last two games against ranked opponents, defeating No. 17 Hofstra 3-0 last season.
