Olean, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's basketball team (2-4) couldn't overcome its slow start on Wednesday night, digging itself a 14-0 hole to open the game in a 51-37 loss at St. Bonaventure (4-3).
McCombs' Reaction
"We came out flat and settled for bad shots on offense in the first half," said head coach
Caroline McCombs. "The energy picked up in the second half and a few players stepped up off the bench to give us a spark, but it was too little too late."
Turning Point
The Seawolves didn't score their first points until a layup by sophomore
Davion Wingate (Atlanta, Ga.) at 8:31 of the second quarter. Unfortuantely, St. Bonaventure built a 14-0 lead up until that point. Stony Brook clamped down on defense in the second quarter to only trail by 10 at the half. Senior
Kori Bayne-Walker (Rochester, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the second half to cut the deficit to eight, but St. Bonaventure responded with a 14-2 run to take a 36-16 lead. Stony Brook would get as close as 40-31 after two free throws by freshman
Giolibeth Perez (Camuy, Puerto Rico) with 7:38 to play in the fourth quarter, but couldn't cut into the lead any further.
Inside the Numbers
- Stony Brook attempted a season-high 33 three-pointers, only managing to knock down five (15.2%).
- The inability to knock down the three-point shot attributed to Stony Brook recording its season-low field goal percentage. The Seawolves made just 13 of 57 shots (22.8%).
- Stony Brook outrebounded St. Bonaventure 37-35.
- Both teams finished with 13 turnovers. Stony Brook did a much better job of taking care of the basketball in the second half, committing just three turnovers to 10 in the first 20 minutes.
- The Stony Brook bench scored a season-best 22 points, outscoring the Bonnies bench 22-8.
Notes
- Wingate led Stony Brook with 10 points.
- Senior Anamaria Skaro (Split, Croatia) was a spark plug off the bench, knocking down two three-pointers on her way to a career-best six points.
- Perez joined Skaro with a career-high six points.
- Sophomore Jerell Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) gave good minutes off the bench, grabbing a career-high six rebounds.
- The Seawolves went 0-for-11 with six turnovers in the first quarter, marking the first time they have been shutout in a quarter since the NCAA went to quarters at the start of the 2015-16 season.
