Seawolves clipped in overtime by UMBC, 69-65

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's basketball team (16-9, 8-4 AE) set a school record with 12 made three-point field goals, but it wasn't enough as the UMBC Retrievers (14-10, 5-6 AE) erased a 12-point second half deficit to win 69-65 in overtime.

Turning Point

The Seawolves led 57-52 with 4:02 to play in regulation after a made three-point field goal by sophomore Aaliyah Worley (Philadelphia, Pa.), but were held scoreless the rest of the way. UMBC's Taylor McCarley tied the game with a basket with 8 seconds to go to send the game into overtime. Stony Brook went 0 for its first nine from the field in the overtime period, allowing UMBC to close it out.

Inside the Numbers

  • Stony Brook wasn't shy to hoist it from three, making 12-of-36 attempts (33.3%). 
  • The Seawolves shot 20-of-60 (33.3%) from the field for the game, while UMBC finished 26-of-56 (46.4%).
  • The Seawolves assisted on 18 of 20 made field goals, its season-high in assists.
  • Stony Brook started 1-for-5 from the free throw line, but made its last 12 attempts to finish 13-for-17 (76.5%). UMBC went 13-for-19 (68.4%) from the line.
  • Stony Brook, usually the dominant team in the paint, was outscored 32-12 in the paint and outrebounded 39-36.
Notes
  • Junior Christa Scognamiglio (Orangeburg, N.Y.), who finished with a team-high 16 points, tied her career-high with five three-pointers on 10 attempts.
  • Senior Brittany Snow (Shamong, N.J.) recorded her sixth double-double of the season, finishing with 15 points and 13 rebounds. She scored Stony Brook's first six points of the overtime, all from the free throw line. 
  • Junior Kori Bayne-Walker (Rochester, N.Y.) finished with seven assists and just one turnover. All seven of her assists came in the first half on just 11 minutes of action.
  • Stony Brook lost at Island Federal Credit Union Arena for the first time since Dec. 1, snapping an eight game-win streak.
  • Worley and freshman Davion Wingate (Atlanta, Ga.) each finished with 11 points on three three-pointers.
