Final Stats
Fort Myers, Fla. - The Stony Brook softball team (5-9) nearly took down No. 21 Notre Dame in its fourth game of the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament, but the Irish scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to win 4-3. The Seawolves were defeated by Ball State 14-1 earlier in the day.
Game One
Stony Brook fell in a 9-0 hole after two innings to Ball State, eventually falling 14-1 in five innings. Senior Melissa Phelan (Saddle Brook, N.J.) drove in Stony Brook's only run with a double in the third inning.
Game Two
The Seawolves were an out away from knocking off the nationally ranked Fighting Irish before they staged a two-out rally. Caitlyn Brook drove in the game-tying and winning runs with a single up the middle. Stony Brook jumped out to the 3-1 lead thanks to sophomore Chelsea Evans (Merced, Calif.) who had three hits and all three runs batted in. Her two-run single in the second gave the Seawolves a 2-0 lead and she added to it with a run-scoring single in the fourth.
Notes
- Sophomore Ileana Torres (Debary, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with a double in the loss at Notre Dame.
- Senior Diane Caruso (Middletown, N.Y.) also added a double.
- Senior Jane Sallen (Lake Worth, Fla.) was the hard luck loser, throwing the entire seven innings and striking out four.
