Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stony Brook lets chances slip in 2-1 loss at Fairleigh Dickinson

Teaneck, N.J. - Senior Raven Edwards (West Orange N.J.) scored 44 seconds into the match, but it was the only tally of the match for the Stony Brook women's soccer team (3--6-2) as it fell to Fairleigh Dickinson (2-7) 2-1 on Thursday night.

Faherty's Reaction

"I am disappointed in the result, but more disappointed that we continue to make the same mistakes at this point in the season," said head coach Brendan Faherty. "With the weekend off from games, it is important for our group to get better on the practice field. We look forward to the challenge that awaits in the defending conference champion, Albany, to open conference play next week."

Highlights
  • Things started brightly for Stony Brook as Edwards scored on the game's first shot, racing on to a through ball from junior Christen Cahill (Pembroke, Mass.) and finishing to the far post.
  • The Knights tied things up in the 8th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick. Dara Battastoni stepped up and converted for her first goal of the season.
  • Fairleigh Dickinson made it 2-1 in the 21st minute. Battastoni and Jessi Reinhardt linked up on a give-and-go on top of the box with Reinhardt finishing for the goal.
  • Stony Brook dominated the second half but was unable to convert numerous grade-A scoring chances into goals. Senior Priscilla Wiggins (Fresno, Calif.) had the first good chance of the half but headed a free kick from senior Hannah Groth (Cedarburg, Wis.) inches wide from eight yards out.
  • Minutes later, Cahill got free in the midfield and hit a firm strike from 25 yards out. The shot beat the keeper but hit the post.
  • Edwards almost had her second goal of the match in the 70th minute but her header from five yards out was saved on the doorstep.
  • With 13 minutes to play in regulation sophomore Lindsay Hutchinson (Millersville, Pa.) hit a booming shot on goal that was tipped over the bar by the diving Knights' goalkeeper.
  • Sophomore Julie Johnstonbaugh (Neshanic Station, N.J.) had two chances in the final six minutes to tie but hit both shots over the bar from 12 yards away. The first opportunity was created by a great cross from Edwards.
Notes
  • Stony Brook led in shots 17-9 after outshooting the Knights 12-4 in the second half.
  • Cahill led the team with four shots.
  • Junior Shannon Robinson (Stony Point, N.Y.) made two saves in the defeat.
  • Stony Brook suffered its first loss of the season when scoring first.
  • Edwards' goal was her team-leading third.
