Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Clark grabs 23 rebounds to tie program record, Seawolves fall vs. Yale

STONY BROOK, N.Y.   Stony Brook women's basketball fell in double overtime vs. Yale, 77-71, on Wednesday night at Island Federal Credit Union Arena. With the loss, the Seawolves fall to 5-3 so far this season.

Cheyenne Clark (Deptford, N.J.) tied a Stony Brook women's basketball program record with 23 total rebounds in the loss, grabbing 15 defensive rebounds and eight offensive rebounds. The only other Stony Brook player to ever record 23 rebounds in a contest was Dana Ferraro, who did so vs. Boston University on Jan. 18, 2006.

Quoting Head Coach Caroline McCombs
"Yale has a very good team, they can score inside and out. They really looked to attack our posts tonight and were effective. I thought we competed at a high level again, but we have to do a better job of taking care of ourselves. Ball security and making free throws will remain a high priority for our team as we move forward."

Highlights
  • Clark recorded 12 points and three assists to go along with her record-setting rebound total, giving the junior her second double-double in 2017-18.
  • Jerell Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) scored a team-high 16 points to go along with five rebounds for the Seawolves.
  • Aaliyah Worley (Philadelphia, PA) added 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, and Shania Johnson (Frederick, MD.) tallied 13 points, seven assists and five rebounds.
  • Stony Brook shot 38.5 percent from the floor in total, collecting 49 total rebounds as a team (second-highest total in 2017-18).
Notes
  • Stony Brook closed the first half on a 11-6 run over the final 4:57. The Seawolves shot 40 percent (10-for-25) in the first half, out-rebounding Yale 24-12.
  • Yale opened up the second half on a 19-9 run of its own, taking the lead back (43-38) at the media timeout midway through the third quarter.
  • The two teams went back and forth down the stretch, as Clark converted on a layup attempt in the paint with just 11 seconds left in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
  • In the first overtime period, Matthews buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key with just five seconds to go to force another OT.
