STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Five members of the Stony Brook men's basketball team earned 2017 America East All-Conference honors as announced by the league office Monday afternoon. Senior
Lucas Woodhouse is atop the group, earning First Team All-Conference recognition. Juniors
Tyrell Sturdivant,
Roland Nyama and
Bryan Sekunda, along with redshirt freshman
Akwasi Yeboah also earned conference post-season accolades.
Woodhouse earned the first all-conference honor of his two-year Stony Brook career after leading the team in scoring and assists all season. The Greenlawn, New York, native has ranked in the top 50 in the nation in assist-turnover ratio, assists and free throw percentage throughout the year, also leading the conference in all three categories. He has scored in double figures in 21 of the team's 29 games this season, notching seven 20-plus point games. He began conference play making his first 30 attempts from the free throw line.
Sturdivant garnered Third Team All-Conference honors and has led the team in rebounding throughout the season, ranking among the top rebounders around the league. The Chester, Pennsylvania, native had a strong start to the season, scoring in double figures in six of the first seven games, after averaging just over three points per game as a sophomore. He got things going for the Seawolves to start conference play, hitting game-winners in back-to-back games to begin what was a five-game win streak to open the America East slate.
Yeboah was named to the All-Rookie team after earning a starting job to begin his debut season. The Chigwell, England, native scored in double figures in the team's first five games of the year. He has tallied 14 double-digit scoring games this season and notched one double-double.
Nyama was named to the All-Defensive team and has been a spark for the Seawolves throughout conference play, finishing the season strong on both ends of the floor. A native of Frankfurt, Germany, Nyama has started 25 straight games for the Seawolves and scored in double figures in six of the final seven regular season games, also adding eight blocks and six steals in that span.
Sekunda rounds out the group of honorees, being named to the All-Academic team for the second time in his career. The State College, Pa., native and business major has been a key player off the bench for Stony Brook all season. He is second only to Woodhouse on the team in threes made (46), shooting 35.1-percent from beyond the arc on the year.
