STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook women's basketball looks to get back on track on Wednesday, Jan. 10, playing host to Albany at Island Federal Credit Union Arena in America East play.
 
Last Time Out
  • Stony Brook women's basketball dropped its first America East home contest of the season on Saturday afternoon at Island Federal Credit Union Arena, falling vs. Hartford by the final score of 75-68.
  • Jerell Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) recorded a career-high 23 points for the Seawolves, shooting 8-of-16 from the floor.
  • Shania Johnson (Frederick, MD.) chipped in with 17 points, five assists and three rebounds. The junior transfer shot 7-of-15 from the floor, nailing three 3-pointers.
  • Giolibeth Perez (Camuy, Puerto Rico) scored five points, grabbed four rebounds and recorded a career-high nine assists.
Scouting Albany
  • The Great Danes are 12-3 so far in 2017-18, going 1-1 in their first two games of conference play. Albany lost at Hartford, 70-55, then topped New Hampshire at home, 66-53 its last time out.
  • Albany is led offensively by Jessica Fequiere, who has posted 18.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest so far this year.
  • The Seawolves are 13-23 all-time vs. Albany (Division I era), falling twice to the Great Danes last season.

Head Coach Caroline McCombs
  • Caroline McCombs is in her fourth season as the head coach of the Stony Brook women's basketball team in 2017-18, as the Seawolves' head coach has risen among the winningest coaches in Stony Brook's Division I era.
  • With eight victories to begin the 2017-18 season, McCombs has now won 54 games on Long Island – which ranks second among Stony Brook coaches in the Division I era. McCombs guided the Seawolves' program to 17 wins in 2014-15, 17 victories in 2015-16, and 12 wins in 2016-17.
Career Numbers for Perez
  • Giolibeth Perez (Camuy, Puerto Rico) has posted career-best numbers over Stony Brook's first two America East contests. The sophomore guard tallied a career-high 11 points in the Seawolves' conference opener at Maine, then recorded a career-high nine assists in Stony Brook's first America East home contest of the year.

Matthews drops 23

  • Jerell Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) recorded a career-high 23 points for the Seawolves on Saturday vs. Hartford, shooting 8-of-16 from the floor.
Clark on the Glass
  • Junior transfer Cheyenne Clark (Deptford, N.J.) has grabbed 143 rebounds (9.5 per game) in total so far this year, which ranks No. 36 nationally and No. 1 in the America East.
  • Clark grabbed 23 rebounds on Dec. 6 vs. Yale, which ties the Seawolves' single-season program record. She then recorded 11 offensive rebounds on Dec. 17 vs. CCSU, and now ranks No. 14 in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (4.0).
Johnson from Distance
  • Shania Johnson (Frederick, MD.) has drained 44 3-point field goals so far in 15 games (2.93 per game) for the Seawolves, which ranks No. 1 in the America East.
Daunting Defense
  • Stony Brook has allowed just 57.1 points per contest, which ranks No. 41 in the nation and No. 2 in the America East.
  • The program has forced opponents to shoot just 27.8 percent from beyond the arc, which checks in at No. 3 in the conference.
America East Weekly Awards
Seawolves' forward India Pagan (New London, Conn.) was named America East Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday, Dec. 18. The first-year forward tallied 19 points and 10 rebounds on 9-of-11 shooting in a pair of Stony Brook wins.
 
Stony Brook has earned three America East weekly award honors so far this year: Preseason Poll
The Seawolves were selected to finish No. 8 in the 2017-18 America East Women's Basketball Coaches' Poll, as announced by the conference on Oct. 19, 2017. Stony Brook received 16 total votes in the poll. New Hampshire was voted as the unanimous league favorite, garnering 64 total votes.
