STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Looking for its fourth win in a row, the Stony Brook men's basketball team faces a familiar foe on Tuesday night, taking on the Norfolk State Spartans at 7 p.m. in Norfolk, Va.
The Seawolves are coming off a 68-58 victory over the Rhode Island Rams on Saturday afternoon in Kingston, R.I., giving them their second win over an Atlantic 10 opponent this season. Redshirt-junior
Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) led the Seawolves with 19 points, while redshirt-sophomore
Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.) chipped in 14 points and six rebounds in the victory. Stony Brook used a 16-3 run in the first half to pull ahead by 11 and kept the lead the rest of the way.
THE OPPONENT
The Spartans currently sport a 3-4 record as the first month of the season finishes. Each of their three wins have come at Echols Memorial Hall, with two losses in true road games and two losses at Mohegan Sun Arena. They have played one game since they met Stony Brook on November 17, defeating Regent University 97-57 in Norfolk last Tuesday.
Derrik Jamerson recorded 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Spartans on the night, while Kyonze Chavis dished eight assists in addition to a 14-point night in which he was one of five double figure scorers. Nic Thomas leads the way in the scoring department, averaging 12.1 points per game entering Tuesday's game. He's also shooting a team-high 37.8 percent from three-point range.
THE SERIES
The Seawolves earned their first win against Norfolk State 72-65 at the Naismith Hall of Fame Tip Off 10 days prior to their meeting in Norfolk. The Spartans have the other victory in the series, defeating Stony Brook 74-68 at Island Federal Arena last season.
PASS, SHOOT, SCORE
The lineup of Cornish, Latimer, Olaniyi, Garcia and Yeboah has proven fruitful for the Seawolves in the early going, with a plus-minus of +19 in the first six games.
This includes four of the five averaging double figures in scoring, with
Akwasi Yeboah leading the way at 18.8 points per game and
Andrew Garcia averaging 17 in his last two outings.
A-PLUS WINS
Entering the 2018-19 season, the Seawolves had one win against an Atlantic 10 Conference opponent in seven tries. They have two in the first three weeks of the season, defeating George Washington and, most recently, Rhode Island on the road.
DREAM DAY FOR DREW
Redshirt-sophomore forward
Andrew Garcia had a career night at Island Federal Arena last Wednesday, recording his first-career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He was the second Seawolf to record a 20 and 10 night in the first five games of the 2018-19 season and set new career marks in each category.
WE WANT MOOR
Freshman
Jules Moor has grown into the Stony Brook offense in his first five games and it showed on Wednesday night, scoring a career-high 10 points and grabbing five rebounds, also a new career mark. He made his first-career start at Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon, recording five steals for a tenacious Seawolves defense.
KWAS = CONSISTENT
Redshirt-junior forward
Akwasi Yeboah has been a consistent presence in the Seawolves attack during the first six games of the 2018-19 campaign. He has recorded 20-point outings in three of the first five games, including back-to-back such efforts against Norfolk State and Molloy.
He has also chipped in double-figure rebounds in the same three games, with an 11-rebound night in Columbia, S.C., helping the Seawolves to their first win over a Southeastern Conference opponent in the Gamecocks.
RED-HOT START
Stony Brook is off to its best start in six seasons, winning five of its first six games en route to a 5-1 record. The Seawolves last started 5-1 in the 2009-10 season en route to a 22-win campaign. The team also won its first America East Regular Season title, advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament before hosting Illinois in the National Invitation Tournament.
