STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Currently on a four-game winning streak and off to the best start in the team's Division I history, the Stony Brook men's basketball returns home to Island Federal Arena for a 7 p.m. tip Saturday night against the Bobcats of Quinnipiac.
Â
Senior guardÂ
Jaron Cornish (Abaco, Bahamas)led the Seawolves to their fourth consecutive win on Tuesday night, scoring 14 of his career-high 22 points in the second half of the team's 79-73 victory over Norfolk State, its second in the last 10 days over the Spartans. Sophomore centerÂ
Jeff Otchere (Bronx, N.Y.)recorded his first career double-figure scoring game, adding 12 points and grabbing seven rebounds.
Â
THE OPPONENT
The Bobcats enter Saturday night with a 2-3 record, most recently falling to UMass on Wednesday night, 69-62, in Amherst, Mass., ending a two-game winning streak for the team. Quinnipiac cut a 21-point lead into single digits in the second half, getting it close as seven with under a minute left but that was as close as it would get.
Â
The team has played just eight on its roster this season, with Cameron Young leading the way at 14.2 points per game. Jacob Rigoni is the team's other double-figure scoring, entering the weekend at 10.4 per night. Quinnpiac boasts one of the most disciplined teams in the country, sitting with the 14th-fewest fouls in the country at 85. Kevin Marfo also enters Saturday's contest with Top 50 marks in offensive rebounding and total rebounds per game.
Â
THE SERIES
This is the first time in the Division I era that the Seawolves and Bobcats will share the court.
CORNISH TAKES OVERÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Senior guard
Jaron Cornish scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half of the Seawolves' 79-73 win at Norfolk State on Saturday. Eight of the 14 came in the final 4:17, as Stony Brook fended off a Norfolk State charge that cut the Seawolves' lead from 18 all the way to three.
Cornish's 22-point outing matched his career-high, previously set against Hofstra in the 2017-18 season and was just his second career 20-point scoring game.
Â
BRIGHT LIGHTS
Redshirt junior forwardÂ
Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England)was in the national spotlight all day on Tuesday in recognition of his performances this season. Before the outing against the Spartans, the England native was named to the Lou Henson Award Preseason Watch List, given to the country's best mid-major men's basketball player. That night, he was spotlighted in SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays, hitting a reverse layup between two Spartan defenders early in the second half that landed on No. 8 in the countdown.
Â
BOARD BULLIESÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
One key to the Seawolves' 6-1 start has been the ability to dominate on the glass, as Stony Brook leads the America East in every rebounding category, grabbing 42.1 boards per game and allowing just 30.9 rebounds a game. That margin of 11.3 is seven rebounds more than the second-place team.
The team's rebounding prowess is among the national ranks as well, sitting inside the top 20 in rebounding margin (13th) and offensive rebounds per game (16th).
                 Â
PASS, SHOOT, SCORE
The lineup of Cornish, Latimer, Olaniyi, Garcia and Yeboah has proven fruitful for the Seawolves in the early going, with a plus-minus of +19 in the first seven games.
This includes four of the five averaging double figures in scoring, with Yeboah leading the way at 18.4 points per game andÂ
Andrew Garcia (Harlem, N.Y.)averaging 15 in his last three outings.
Â
RED-HOT START
Stony Brook is off to its best start in the Division I era, winning six of its first seven games en route to a 6-1 record. The team's previous best start was in the 2009-10 season, when the Seawolves started 5-1 en route to a 22-win season and an America East regular season championship, the first ever for the program.
UP NEXT
Stony Brook is back on the road Wednesday night, taking on Manhattan in the Bronx at 7 p.m. at the Draddy Gymnasium.
