Seawolves Earn 10th Win with 70-45 Victory Over Wagner

STONY BROOK, N.Y.– The Stony Brook women's basketball team kept things rolling this season as they downed Wagner, 70-45, on Saturday afternoon at the Island Federal Arena. The victory marked the 10th win in a row for the Seawolves as the team improves to 10-1 on the year.

Three players got into double-figure scoring with senior G Shania Johnson (Frederick, Md.) lighting up the floor with 18 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore F India Pagan (New London, Conn.) got right back to where she left off, recording 15 points and nine rebounds. Redshirt sophomore G Oksana Gouchie-Provencher (Montreal, Canada) also put up big numbers, notching 10 points, seven rebounds and a career-high five blocks.

McCOMBS REACTION
"Overall it was a great team effort. We got 12 players out on the floor today and were able to get 16 points from our bench. We were very solid defensively tonight and when we are good defensively we feed off of each other's energy and play team basketball."

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Stony Brook kicked off the game with a 7-0 scoring run following layups from freshman G Anastasia Warren (Atlanta, Ga.) and India Pagan as well as a 3-pointer from Oksana Gouchie-Provencher.
  • After the first 10 minutes, the Seawolves had a 14-5 lead that was capped off with a three from sophomore G/F Jonae Cox (Portsmouth, Va.).
  • Wagner picked things up in the second quarter, putting in two quick baskets after the break to pull within five, but Shania Johnson knocked down a three following a Stony Brook timeout to snap the Seahawks' run.
  • Later in the quarter, the team went on an 8-0 spurt that was highlighted by a layup from sophomore F McKenzie Bushee (Pittsburgh, Pa.) from a behind-the-back feed from Johnson.
  • After halftime, Wagner came running out of the gate in the third, reeling off nine unanswered points, but India Pagan put a stop to the run with back-to-back baskets.
  • A three by Johnson with under three minutes to go in the quarter put Stony Brook up by 20 points en route to a 47-25 lead with just the final period left to go.
  • Gouchie-Provencher was all over the floor in the fourth, kicking off the period with an old-fashioned three-point play before going down to the other side of the floor and notching back-to-back blocks.
