GAME NOTES Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – One game stands between the Stony Brook men's basketball team and the Christmas holiday and it's with a familiar foe, as the Seawolves take on Quinnipiac Saturday afternoon in Hamden, Conn.

Stony Brook defeated the Bobcats at Island Federal Arena 71-61 on December 1 and is coming off a 71-64 loss to Hofstra Wednesday night at the same spot. Freshman Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.) led the Seawolves with 22 points, while redshirt-junior Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) chipped in 15.

THE OPPONENT
The Bobcats evened their 2018 record at 5-5 on Wednesday night, defeating Bethune-Cookman 87-63 at the People's United Center. The team has now won three of its last four entering Saturday night. Cameron Young led six double-figure scorers for Quinnipiac, scoring 18 points and hitting three triples on the night. Kevin Marfo had a double-double at 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Young is the team's leading scorer and the only one averaging double digits, coming into Saturday's contest scoring 18.1 points per game. Marfo is averaging 7.1 points but is the team's leading rebounder at 8.9 boards per game.

THE SERIES
The two programs had not met coming into the 2018-19 season but will have their second meeting in the last 21 days on Saturday. Stony Brook defeated Quinnipiac 71-61 behind 19 points from Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England), who shot 6-for-11 on the night. Freshman Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.) added 14 and sophomore Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.) added 13.

ICE IN HIS VEINS
Cold weather does not bother freshman Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.), as he's scored in double figures in each of his six December appearances, including a career-high 22 points against Hofstra on Wednesday night. During this six-game stretch, he is averaging 15.3 points per game and is on fire from long range, shooting 17-for-31 from beyond the arc.

ELI IS EVERYWHERE
Sophomore Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.) has made an impact in all facets of the game in his last three appearances. Along with highlight reel blocks against LIU Brooklyn and Hofstra, the Newark, N.J. native has averaged 11.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game, along with a pair of steals on Wednesday night against Hofstra. He is also shooting the ball efficiently, coming in at 15-for-34 overall and 2-for-5 from deep.

RECORD START
Stony Brook won its 10th non-conference game on Sunday afternoon, breaking the D1 record for most wins before conference play. The Seawolves last won 10 non-conference games in 1992-93 and will have three more opportunities to tack onto that total before league play begins in the 2019 calendar year.

NO-TCHERE
Sophomore Jeff Otchere (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded four blocks in Sunday's win, including the sealer with 45 seconds left that kept Stony Brook in the lead against the Blue Hens. The rim protector for the Seawolves has now totaled 25 on the season in 12 games, which is the most in the conference. He is averaging 2.1 rejections per game, which is tied for the league lead with Binghamton's Caleb Stewart and Vermont's Anthony Lamb.

CARDIAC SEAWOLVES
Of Stony Brook's 10 wins this season, only one has come by more than 10 points, a 97-61 win over Molloy the night before Thanksgiving. Along with that, Stony Brook has completed a pair of second-half comebacks in which they were down by double figures, including a 12-point rally against LIU on Wednesday night. They also scored the last seven points in Sunday's win in which they erased a deficit against Delaware with 1:24 left.

1K-WAS
Redshirt-junior Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England)became the ninth player in Stony Brook's Division I history to reach the 1,000 point plateau, hitting a game-winning three with under a minute left to help him eclipse the milestone against LIU Brooklyn. He has scored in double figures in 51 of his 76 career appearances and 17 consecutive games dating back to last season. The England native has also scored 20 points in four of his last five games, averaging 22.4 per game in that span.

UP NEXT
After the Christmas holiday, Stony Brook wraps its non-conference schedule on December 29, taking on Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern.
