STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Sporting a five-game winning streak, the Stony Brook men's basketball program heads into the Big Apple for a midweek matchup with Manhattan on Wednesday night. The Seawolves are sporting an unbeaten 4-0 record in road games this season as they hit the road for back to back games this week.
The Seawolves built a 20-point advantage in the first half against Quinnipiac on Saturday night, then held on for a 10-point victory over the Bobcats at Island Federal Arena. Redshirt-junior
Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) led the way with 19 points, while freshman
Miles Latimer (Fairfax, Va.) added 14 and sophomore
Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.) returned to action with a 13-point performance.
THE OPPONENT
The Jaspers enter Wednesday night 0-2 at the Draddy Gymnasium and 2-5 overall, coming off back to back losses to George Washington by 27 and Fordham by one. This will be the second of three in a row at home for Manhattan. They are coming off a one-point loss in the annual Battle of the Bronx, this time held at home for the Jaspers, to rival Fordham 57-56. Nehemiah Mack missed a three as time expired as Fordham held on for the win.
Pauly Paulicap leads the Jaspers in scoring at 7.5 points per game, with Warren Williams (7.4 ppg) right behind him on the team leaderboard. Ebube Ebube is scoring 6.1 per contest, while grabbing seven rebounds per game. The Jaspers sit inside the Top 25 nationally in scoring defense (59.1 points per game) and turnovers forced (17.57).
THE SERIES
The Seawolves and Jaspers have split the previous two meetings, winning the most recent meeting at Manhattan, 50-44, in 2012-13. Manhattan took an ESPN BracketBusters game in 2012 in the first-ever game between the two programs.
GONE STREAKING
Entering Tuesday's action, the Seawolves are one of 22 teams with an active winning streak of five games or longer, including fellow SUNY program Buffalo. Stony Brook's streak started with a win against Norfolk State in the final Hall of Fame Tip-Off game. The squad has also won four consecutive road games to start 2018, which is tied for the eighth-longest streak in the country with Big Ten teams Michigan and Wisconsin, among others.
BALANCING ACT
Going into Wednesday's contest, the Seawolves have four double-figure scorers, led by redshirt-junior Akwasi Yeboah at 18.5 per game. Two Seawolves, Elijah Olaniyi (14.8) and Andrew Garcia (10.8), have accomplished the feat while not starting in all eight games this season. Freshman Miles Latimer (10.4) joins the category, rounding out the four. Senior Jaron Cornish is next on the list, scoring just under nine at 8.9 per game.
CORNISH TAKES OVER
Senior guard Jaron Cornish scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half of the Seawolves' 79-73 win at Norfolk State on Saturday. Eight of the 14 came in the final 4:17, as Stony Brook fended off a Norfolk State charge that cut the Seawolves' lead from 18 all the way to three. Cornish's 22-point outing matched his career-high, previously set against Hofstra in the 2017-18 season and was just his second career 20-point scoring game.
BOARD BULLIES
One key to the Seawolves' 7-1 start has been the ability to dominate on the glass, as Stony Brook leads the America East in every rebounding category, grabbing 42.0 boards per game and allowing just 31.2 rebounds a game. That margin of 10.8 is seven rebounds more than the second-place team. The team's rebounding prowess is among the national ranks as well, sitting inside the top 20 in rebounding margin (16th).
UP NEXT
The Seawolves round out their two-game road trip on Saturday afternoon, playing in Providence, R.I. against Brown at 2 p.m.
