STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's basketball team plays its eighth game away from home on Saturday afternoon, heading across the Long Island Sound to Providence, R.I. to take on the Brown Bears.
The Seawolves are coming off a 69-62 win over Manhattan on Wednesday night at Draddy Gymnasium after shooting 34-for-41 from the free throw line, including 24-for-29 in the second half. Redshirt-junior
Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England)scored a season-high 25 points on the night, leading four players in double figures for
Jeff Boals' club.
THE OPPONENT
Brown comes in losers of two of its last three after a five-game winning streak powered them above the .500 mark. They currently sit at 6-4 after a 70-55 loss to Butler on Wednesday night in Indianapolis, Ind. Desmond Cambridge led the way with 15 points for the Bears, while Tamenang Choh came a bucket away from a double-double, finishing the night with eight points and 10 rebounds.
On the season, Cambridge is the team's leading scorer, coming in at 16.2 points per game on 41.9 percent shooting. He's also blocking 1.6 shots per game in just under 26 minutes per outing. The Bears enter Thursday's action with the eighth-best 3-point defense in the country, holding teams to 25.7 percent from the outside. They are also 11th in total blocks, with 48 on the season. Both numbers lead the Ivy League.
THE SERIES
The Seawolves have won the last two meetings and four of the overall six against Brown, dating back to Stony Brook's first Division I year in 1999. Stony Brook won last year's edition 77-64 at Island Federal Arena.
Akwasi Yeboah scored 13 on the night and
Elijah Olaniyi added 11 in the win.
TAKING CHARITY
The Seawolves made 34 free throws on Wednesday night in 41 attempts, resulting in just under half of their offensive output in a 69-62 win over Manhattan. This is the most free throw attempts in a game since the 2016-17 season, when the Seawolves attempted 46 against UMBC.
NO THREES FOR YOU
The Stony Brook 3-point defense has been tenacious as of late, allowing teams to hit three or less from beyond the arc in three of the last four games, including the Jaspers going 3-for-20 on Wednesday night. Over the last four games, Stony Brook is allowing teams to shoot just 15-for-83, or 18.1 percent, from
long range.
GONE STREAKING
Entering Tuesday's action, the Seawolves are one of 22 teams with an active winning streak of five games or longer, including fellow SUNY program Buffalo. Stony Brook's streak started with a win against Norfolk State in the final Hall of Fame Tip-Off game. The squad has also won four consecutive road games to start 2018, which is tied for the eighth-longest streak in the country with Big Ten teams Michigan and Wisconsin, among others.
BALANCING ACT
Going into Saturday's contest, the Seawolves have four double-figure scorers, led by redshirt-junior
Akwasi Yeboah at 19.2 per game. Two Seawolves,
