No. 1 Stony Brook Set for Road Clash vs. No. 8 Northwestern on Saturday

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 1 Stony Brook women's lacrosse hits the road again on Saturday, squaring off with No. 8 Northwestern in the program's fourth-straight contest vs. a nationally-ranked opponent to begin the 2018 season.
 
No. 1 In The Polls
  • For the first time in program history, Stony Brook women's lacrosse has been ranked No. 1 nationally in all three major polls.
  • After topping No. 20 Denver at LaValle Stadium on Sunday, the Seawolves have earned the top spot in all three major polls (IWLCA Coaches' Poll, Cascade/Inside Lacrosse, Nike/US Lacrosse), as announced on Monday, Feb. 26.
  • Stony Brook has won three-straight contests to begin the 2018 season, downing three nationally-ranked teams. The program first defeated No. 5 USC (14-10) on Feb. 16, then knocked off No. 23 Stanford (14-9) on Feb. 19 before returning to LaValle for its 2018 home opener. 
Scouting Northwestern
  • Northwestern is 4-1 so far this year, topping nationally-ranked foe USC (9-5) its last time out.
  • The program has been ranked No. 8 nationally in the latest IWLCA Poll.
  • Selena Lasota leads the program offensively so far, recording 15 goals and six assists for 21 total points.
  • The Seawolves are 3-1 all-time vs. Northwestern, winning the last two meetings between the two programs.
Head Coach Joe Spallina
  • Seawolves' head coach Joe Spallina enters his seventh season with the program, owning a 106-20 overall record at Stony Brook.
  • The engineer of the nation's best turnaround in 2012 and winningest coach in program history after only three seasons, Spallina has guided the Seawolves to a 33-2 record in America East action and five consecutive America East titles and NCAA Tournament appearances.
  • Under Spallina, Stony Brook has produced 12 IWLCA All-Americans, seven Tewaaraton nominees, one Tewaaraton finalist, five conference championships, five NCAA Tournament second-round berths and an NCAA quarterfinal appearance.
There's No Place Like Home
  • The Seawolves have been dominant at LaValle Stadium over the last six seasons, posting a 60-5 record at home (a .922 winning percentage).
  • Stony Brook went 11-0 at home in 2017 and has won 23-straight games at LaValle Stadium.

The Seawolves have recorded just 34 turnovers in the first three contests of the season, which is the second-fewest in the nation so far this year (11.33 turnovers per contest).

Stony Brook returns three 100-point scorers to its roster for the 2018 season: 2017 Season
  • Stony Brook is coming off its best season in program history, going 20-2 in 2017. The Seawolves fell at Maryland in the NCAA Quarterfinal round after winning its fifth-straight America East title on May 7, 2017.
  • The Seawolves won 20 games in a season for the first time in program history, topping Bryant and Northwestern in NCAA Tournament action.
Career Individual Records
Kylie Ohlmiller and Courtney Murphy are moving closer to breaking Division I career statistical records:
  • Kylie Ohlmiller now has 356 career points, needing just 89 more points to break the NCAA career record set by Maryland's Jen Adams (445). The senior also has 182 career assists now, needing 43 more to break the NCAA record set by Northwestern's Hannah Nielsen (224). 
  • Courtney Murphy now has 259 career goals, needing just 31 more goals to break the NCAA record set by Temple's Gail Cummings (289).
