Solid Pitching, Timely Hitting and Good Defense Lead Seawolves to DH Sweep over Quinnipiac


STONY BROOK, N.Y.  – Solid pitching, timely hitting and good defense led the Stony Brook baseball team to a doubleheader sweep over visiting Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.
 
The Seawolves (11-9) earned a 10-4 win in game one and took game two 5-1 over the Bobcats (8-11).
 
Sophomore RHP Brian Herrmann (Northport, N.Y.) went 6.2 innings in game one and allowed four runs on five hits and struck out three to pick up his third win of the season. Junior RHP Bret Clarke (Royersford, Pa.) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of game two and allowed just three hits and a run to earn his second victory of the season.
 
Offensively, sophomore 1B Chris Hamilton (Schenectady, N.Y.) belted his second home run of the season an first career grand slam with two outs in the first inning of game one to break it open. Sophomore SS Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.) collected four hits combined on the day and scored four times.

Game One Turning Point
With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning, sophomore 1B Chris Hamilton (Schenectady, N.Y.) sent a pitch over the right field fence that gave Stony Brook a 4-0 lead. The Seawolves added two more runs in the second inning to extend the lead to 6-0.
 
Game Two Turning Point
Stony Brook broke a scoreless and hitless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs on three hits, including an RBI single from senior 3B Bobby Honeyman (Massapequa, N.Y.).

Quoting Head Coach Matt Senk
"The guys did a lot of really good things today that allowed for us to gain the sweep. We pitched well. We played really good defense. We ran the bases and had timely hitting. If you do all those things you are going to have a good result and that is what happened today."
 
Notes/Stats
  • Stony Brook hit three doubles on Saturday to bring the season total to 50 and stay among the NCAA leaders.
  • Sophomore RHP Brian Herrmann (Northport, N.Y.) went 6.2 innings on Saturday in game one for his longest outing of the season. He earned his third win of season seventh of his career.
  • Sophomore 1B Chris Hamilton (Schenectady, N.Y.) hit his first career grand slam in the first inning of game one. It also was his second homer of the season and third of his career.
  • Hamilton's four RBI in game one are a career-high and marked his second multi-RBI game of the season.
  • Junior RHP Bret Clarke (Royersford, Pa.) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of game two. He picked up his second victory of the season and 11th of his career with his longest outing of the season.
  • Sophomore SS Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.) had two hits in each game on Saturday and how has six multi-hit games this season.
  • Senior LF Andruw Gazzola (Coman, N.Y.) had a pair of hits in game one for his third multi-hit game of the season.
  • Sophomore RF Michael Wilson (Colonia, N.J.) drove in a total of four runs on Saturday (three in game one) and leads the team with six multi-RBI games this season.

Stony Brook and Quinnipiac will complete the three-game series with a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
