Seawolves Sweep DH at Binghamton Behind Solid Pitching

VESTAL, N.Y. – Four Stony Brook baseball pitchers combined to allow just one run to host Binghamton over the two games on Saturday to earn the sweep of the America East Conference doubleheader at the Bearcat Sports Complex. The Seawolves earned a 5-0 victory in game one and claimed game two 3-1.
 
Sophomore RHP Greg Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) allowed just two hits in 7.0 innings and struckout six for the Seawolves (23-18. 9-8 AE) to picked up his third win of the year in game one, while fellow sophomore RHP Brian Herrmann (Northport, N.Y.) allowed just one unearned run on six hits in 6.o innings of work in game two to earn his fifth victory of the season.
 
Senior RHP Aaron Pinto (West Covina, Calif.) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings in game one to earn his 10th save of the season, while sophomore RHP Aaron Glickstein (Dix Hills, N.Y.) threw a perfect seven inning in game two for his first career save.
 
Senior LF Andruw Gazzola (Coram, N.Y.) tallied six hits and three RBI combined in the two games, while sophomore SS Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.) had five hits, including his fourth home run of the season.
 
Game One Turning Point
Senior LF Andruw Gazzola (Coram, N.Y.) placed a two-out squeeze bunt down the third-base line in the fifth inning that scored junior C Sean Buckhout (West Nyack, N.Y.) from third to break to scoreless tie and be all the runs the Seawolves would need to earn the victory.
 
Game Two Turning Point
Stony Brook scored one in the first inning when junior CF Cristian Montes (Pacioma, Calif.) singled to bring home Gazzola. The Seawolves' didn't surrender the lead, but added what proved to be a vital run in the sixth inning when sophomore 1B Chris Hamilton (Schenectady, N.Y.) delivered a two-out single that scored freshman C John Tuccillo (Clinton Corners, N.Y.). The run proved important when Binghamton plated their only run of the day in the bottom of the sixth.

"The team came out today with tremendous focus and determination. Combine that with solid pitching, near errorless defense and timely hitting and you will end up with a terrific result like today."
 
Notes/Stats
  • Sophomore SS Nick Grande (Smithtown, N.Y.) swiped one base on Saturday for his 25th stolen base of the season to move him within 11 of the single season record of 36 held by Travis Jankowski.
  • Grande had three hits in game one and two hits in game two and now has 17 multi-hit game of the season.
  • Grande belted his team-leading fourth home run of the season in the top of the seventh inning in game two.
  • Senior RHP Aaron Pinto (West Covina, Calif.) earned his 10th save of the season and the 13th of his career in game one. He is now just two saves away from breaking former teammate Cam Stone's career saves record at Stony Brook.
  • Sophomore RHP Brian Herrmann (Northport, N.Y.) earned his fifth win of the season and ninth of his career.
  • Sophomore RHP Greg Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) picked up his third win of the season and fifth of his career.
  • Sophomore RHP Aaron Glickstein (Dix Hills, N.Y.) recorded his first career save in game two.
  • Senior 3B Bobby Honeyman (Massapequa, N.Y.) recorded two hits game one for his team-leading 18th multi-hit game of the season.
  • Senior LF Andruw Gazzola (Coram, N.Y.) collected four hits and three RBI in game one for his sixth multi-hit game of the season and his first four-hit game. It also marked his first multi-RBI game of the season.  He added two hits in game two for his seventh multi-hit game.
  • Freshman C John Tuccillo (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) posted a pair of hits in game two for his seventh multi-hit game of the season.
  • Junior CF Cristian Montes (Pacioma, Calif.) had two hits in game two for his fifth multi-hit game of the season.
  • Sophomore RF Michael Wilson (Colonia, N.J.) collected three hits on Thursday for his 12th multi-hit game of the season and his fourth three-hit game.
  • Junior DH Michael Russell (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a pair of hits on Thursday for his fourth multi-hit game of the season.
  • With a pair of victories on Saturday, head coach Matt Senk is now just six wins away from 800 for his career. He picked up victories 793 and 794 on Saturday.
  • Stony Brook hit three doubles on Saturday to bring the Seawolves' season total to 91 and remain among the nation's leaders.

Stony Brook and Binghamton will complete the series with a single game on Sunday at 11 a.m. from the Bearcat Sports Complex.
